September weather forecast: Will Nairobi continue to be cold this month?

The Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met), however, expects Nairobi to experience generally sunny and dry conditions with occasional rainfall during the month.
In its September 2026 monthly weather forecast issued on Monday, August 31, 2026, Kenya Met said several parts of the country are likely to experience generally sunny and dry conditions during the month.
“Generally sunny and dry conditions with occasional rainfall are expected over Nairobi, Kiambu, Murang’a, Nyeri, Embu, Meru, Tharaka-Nithi, Kirinyaga, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Makueni, Kitui, Machakos, Taita-Taveta, Kajiado, Marsabit and most parts of Wajir, Mandera, Garissa, Narok, Nakuru and Tana River Counties,” Kenya Met said.
Will Nairobi remain cold in September?
While Nairobi experienced chilly conditions in August, Kenya Met’s latest forecast does not point to a generally colder September.
The weather agency said mean temperatures are expected to be warmer than average throughout the country.
“Mean temperatures are expected to be warmer than average throughout the country,” Weatherman stated.
This suggests that although Nairobi residents could still experience periods of cool weather, particularly when rainfall occurs, the overall temperature outlook for September is warmer than average.
The forecast also indicates that Nairobi is expected to remain largely sunny and dry, with occasional rainfall.
What about the coming months?
According to Kenya Met, the September-October-November outlook indicates that weather conditions are expected to change as the year progresses.
The agency forecasts that several parts of the country will experience dry conditions in September, followed by widespread rainfall and localised heavy rainfall events in October and November.
For Nairobi and several counties in the central and eastern regions, including Kiambu, Murang’a, Nyeri, Embu, Meru, Tharaka-Nithi, Kirinyaga, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Machakos, Makueni and Kitui, Kenya Met expects sunny and dry weather conditions with occasional rainfall in September.
“Several parts of the country are expected to experience dry conditions in September and widespread rainfall with localised heavy rainfall events in October and November. Trans Nzola, Bungoma, Busia, Kakamega, Siaya, Vihiga, Nandi, Uasin-Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Kisumu, Kericho, Nyamira, Kisil, Bomet, Migori, Homa Bay, Narok, West Pokot and Turkana Counties are expected to receive below-average rainfall in September and above-average rainfall in October and September,” Kenya Met added.
“Kwale, Killfi, Mombasa, Lamu and parts of Tana River, Garissa, Wajir and Mandera Counties are likely to receive near-average rainfall during the month of September and above average in October and November.”
“Taita Taveta, Mandera, Wajir, Marsabit, Murang’a, Nyeri, Embu, Meru, Tharaka-Nithi, Kirinyaga, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Kiambu, Nairobi, Machakos, Makueni, Kitui and much of Garissa Counties are expected to experience sunny and dry weather conditions with occasional rainfall in September.”
The outlook therefore suggests that Nairobi’s weather may remain relatively dry for much of September, even as occasional rainfall is expected.
For residents wondering whether the chilly August weather will return with the same intensity, the current Kenya Met’s forecast points instead to a warmer-than-average September, although day-to-day weather conditions may vary.
