Select areas in 3 counties to experience power outage on Sunday, August 9

Kenya Power has announced scheduled electricity supply interruptions set to affect select areas in Uasin Gishu, Bungoma, and Meru counties on Sunday, August 9, 2026.

The utility company has indicated that the temporary shutdowns form part of routine system maintenance aimed at strengthening network reliability across the regions.

In an update shared on social media on Saturday, August 8, 2026, the power distributor gave a heads-up to residents, noting, “Good evening. The listed areas will be under a planned power interruption dated 09.08.2026.”

Affected areas and schedules

In the North Rift region, residents in parts of Uasin Gishu County will experience a power blackout from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The specific locations marked for maintenance in this area include Mugunga, Pan Paper, Milimani, Nabemo, and surrounding customer establishments.

Further west in Bungoma County, electricity supply will be turned off in the Butonge area from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The scheduled maintenance will directly affect Butonge High School, Butonge Market, and nearby establishments.

The Mt. Kenya region will experience the longest duration of maintenance, with outages in Meru County lasting from 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM. The planned interruption will cover the whole of Meru Town and Kwa Ng’ombe.

Key facilities and locations listed in the notice include Ezri Hotel, Alba Hotel, Meru Slopes, Milimani, Sayen Hyper Mart, Grace Park Hospital, Meru Prison, and Winners Church.

Also affected are Total Petrol Station, Meru General Hospital, Cathedral, Meru Green Wood Mall, Kooje Stage, Meru Royal, Meru Central Diaries, Gakoromone, Shauri Yako, Marvis Petroleum Ltd, Againe, Kiambogo C/Fact, Imenti North Muslim Girls, and Mulanthakari Market and Girls.

The shutdown will also reach Thimangiri, Thuura C/Fact, Kauthene Market, Nkoobo C/Fact, Munithu Primary, Mukugurukia, Ndekero Village, Kambi ya Nyanyua, Ndurumo, Kamukara, Meru Brook School, Rwanyange, Mbeu Market, Kathirune Market, Giaki Market, Nthamiri Market, Kabaune Shopping Centre, Ciothirai Police Station, Ciothirai Village, Gachua Market, Mbuuta Primary, CCM, Iria ria Manthuka Primary, and adjacent areas.

Worth noting, the Kenya Power routine network maintenance allows technical teams to repair worn infrastructure, clear lines, and upgrade transformer capacity to avoid unexpected breakdowns.

Business owners and residents in the specified zones are encouraged to make necessary arrangements to handle the day-long disruption. Power supply is expected to resume as soon as the scheduled engineering works are finished.
