Police seize 2 bales of bhang in Kakamega

Police officers in Kakamega County have seized two bales of bhang following a successful operation along the Webuye–Eldoret Highway, as the crackdown on illicit drugs continues in the region.

According to the National Police Service, officers from Lumakanda Police Station acted on intelligence received from members of the public regarding a vehicle suspected of transporting cannabis sativa.

In a statement on Monday, January 12, 2026, the NPS revealed that, acting swiftly, the officers mounted a strategic ambush earlier today along the busy highway.

The suspect vehicle, travelling from Busia to Eldoret, was intercepted during the operation. Upon conducting a thorough search, officers recovered two bales of dry plant material believed to be cannabis (bhang).

“Following a search, two bales were recovered from the vehicle. Each bale weighed approximately 10 kilograms and contained a dry plant material suspected to be cannabis (bhang),” read the statement in part.

The driver of the vehicle was immediately arrested, while the motor vehicle used to ferry the illicit drugs was impounded.

“This operation underscores the critical role of public cooperation and close collaboration with law enforcement in the fight against drug trafficking. The National Police Service remains committed to sustaining these efforts and safeguarding our communities from the harmful effects of illicit drugs.”

This comes a few days after four persons of interest were nabbed in Nairobi following a series of police operations targeting narcotics distribution in the city.

In an X post on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, the National Police Service said officers from the South B Police Station in Makadara Sub-County conducted a raid along the Ngong River in the Kayaba slums yesterday, led by the Officer Commanding Station (OCS)

During the operation, officers recovered a total of six kilograms of a substance believed to be cannabis sativa, along with twenty-nine rolls of a green substance also suspected to be cannabis.

Police described the find as intended for distribution within the city.
