Tana River Senator Danson Mungatana has urged Kenyans to embrace and promote their cultural heritage to instil a sense of identity and belonging among the youth.

The call came during his visit to Wema Village on Saturday, December 27, 2025, where he joined in the Pokomo cultural celebrations. The event featured traditional music, dances, and an exhibition showcasing various cultural artefacts and their uses.

“We must promote our culture to give our youth a sense of belonging,” he said.

Further, the senator assured the residents that he would follow up on the rebuilding efforts to restore access and connectivity.

“Upon request from local leaders, I promised a follow-up on the road rebuilding after the floods. Upon request from the youth, I donated to their youth village solar lighting project.”

He was accompanied by Principal Secretary Idriss Dokota, local MCA Hon. Dumba Semi, and County Director of Tourism Lilian Shari, who joined in celebrating the rich heritage of the Pokomo community.

The Bill, which was read for the first time in the Senate on July 16, 2025, has been referred to the Standing Committee on Labour and Social Welfare for further scrutiny.

“The Senate invites you to submit your views on the Culture Bill, 2024 (National Assembly Bills No. 12 of 2024),” the Senate posted on their X on Friday, July 25, 2025.

The Bill seeks to promote national identity and cultural expression, aligning with Article 11 of the Constitution. It aims to protect Kenya’s diverse cultural heritage while ensuring that communities benefit economically from the use of their traditions and practices through compensation and royalties.

It also outlines a framework for national cultural development, encompassing literature, the arts, traditional celebrations, science, media, and other cultural expressions.

The full text of the Culture Bill, 2024, along with a simplified digest of its contents, is available on the Parliament of Kenya website.
