Mosiria rescues man battling mental illness after losing both parents

By , January 8, 2026

Nairobi’s Citizen Engagement and Customer Service CEC Geoffrey Mosiria has shared how he intervened to help a young man battling mental illness and severe depression after the loss of both his parents.

According to Mosiria, the young man’s condition worsened after some relatives dismissed his illness, claiming he was pretending despite clear medical advice.

In a statement shared on his official social media accounts on Thursday, January 8, 2026, he revealed that the man had earlier been taken to Mathari Mental Hospital, where doctors strongly recommended admission to a rehabilitation centre for specialised care.

“Yesterday, I rescued a young man battling mental illness and severe depression. This young man has been suffering deeply after losing both his parents,” Mosiria revealed.

“Sadly, instead of receiving support, some of his own relatives dismissed his condition, claiming he was pretending. His situation continued to deteriorate despite clear medical advice.”

However, Mosiria says, the recommendation was not followed through, because private rehabilitation centres were considered too expensive. As a result, the young man’s mental health continued to deteriorate.

“Earlier, the concerned family member had taken him to Mathari Mental Hospital, where doctors strongly recommended that he be admitted to a rehabilitation centre for specialised care. Unfortunately, no one followed up on this recommendation, mainly because private rehabilitation centres were said to be “too expensive.””he added.

Mosiria’s intervention

Mosiria further disclosed that after learning about the situation, he personally intervened and facilitated the man’s admission to a rehabilitation centre, accompanied by his maternal aunt, who supported the decision.

“When I learned of his condition, I could not stand by and watch a life slip away. Yesterday, I intervened and personally facilitated his admission to a rehabilitation centre, accompanied by his maternal aunt, who fully supported the decision,” he revealed.

“This intervention may have saved a life.”

Mental illness and depression

In addition, Mosiria used the incident to urge the public to take mental health seriously, stressing that mental illness and depression are real and that no one deserves to be abandoned or exploited at their weakest moment.

He called on society to choose humanity, compassion and dignity over greed.

“Mental illness is real. Depression is real. And no one deserves to be abandoned or exploited at their weakest moment,” Mosiria added.

“As a society, we must stand up for the vulnerable and treat mental health with the seriousness, compassion, and dignity it deserves. Let us choose humanity over greed. Always.”
