Nairobi County Chief Officer for Citizen Engagement and Customer Service, Geoffrey Mosiria, has offered to provide a torch for use during the burial rituals of the late politician Cyrus Jirongo, while expressing his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.

Taking to his official social media accounts on Monday, December 29, 2025, Mosiria conveyed his sympathy to the Jirongo family, acknowledging the deep loss and emphasising his prayers for them during this difficult period.

“My condolences to the family of our departed leader as he is laid to rest tomorrow. God knows how it happened, and to the family, I keep you in my prayers,” Mosiria said.

He further addressed an inquiry regarding the traditional torch to be used at the burial, noting that he was willing to provide it for the ceremonies.

“Naskia mnataka tochi pale kwa mazishi, kujia hii yangu—situmii siku hizi tangu nitoke mazingira! Poleni sana, the family of Cyrus Jirongo,” he added.

Moses Kuria offers to buy the torch

Mosiria’s gesture comes days after former President William Ruto’s economic adviser, Moses Kuria, offered to buy a torch should it be necessary for the late Jirongo to be buried with one so that it may haunt his killers.

While speaking during the requiem mass held at CITAM Valley Road on Saturday, December 27, 2025, Moses Kuria called for a thorough investigation into the inconsistencies surrounding Jirongo’s death, arguing that conducting a comprehensive investigation does not presume guilt on anyone.

“We need to have a thorough investigation into anything questionable. It does not presume guilt on anyone to have a thorough investigation. I will offer to buy the torch,” Kuria said.

George Natembeya’s concerns

Moses Kuria is not the only politician and ally of Jirongo who has called for the late leader to be buried with a torch. Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya also recently suggested that Jirongo should be buried with one.

“Na mimi naambia Watiriki, kwa sababu Mtiriki mtu wao akikufa kwa njia ambayo haijulikani, wanazikwa na torch. Hiyo torch inawekwa makaa na inamulika, inaenda kuwamulika wale ambao walimaliza marehemu.”

“Wakati inazima, yule aliua pia anazima. Tunazika Jirongo, lakini tunazika na torch. Aki ya Mungu, kama kuna mtu aliguza Jirongo, ataenda,” Natembeya said.

Saboti MP Caleb Amisi has equally echoed the same sentiments, saying that the late leader should be buried with a torch, adding that by the time the torch goes off, Jirongo’s killer would also meet his end.

Fred Gumo expresses concerns

However, former Westlands Member of Parliament Fred Gumo has poured cold water on calls to use a traditional torch ritual to identify those responsible for the death of Jirongo, insisting that only thorough investigations can establish the truth.

Speaking during a memorial service attended by senior government and security officials, including National Police Service Deputy Inspector General Gilbert Masengeli, Gumo said speculation and superstition would not help the family or the country.

Gumo noted that while emotions around Jirongo’s death remain high, Kenyans should allow investigators to do their work without pressure or distractions.
