Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ng’eno dies in grisly Nandi helicopter crash

Emurua Dikirr Member of Parliament Johana Ng’eno is among six individuals who died in a helicopter crash in Mosop, Nandi County, on Saturday, February 28, 2026.
Videos circulating online from the scene show the aircraft engulfed in flames, with thick smoke rising above the wreckage.
Charred remains were visible inside the helicopter, partially obscured by thick bushes, while onlookers could be seen milling around the crash site.
The helicopter was an Airbus H125 with registration 5Y-DSB.

The tragic news was confirmed by MPs Babu Owino and Ndindi Nyoro, who expressed deep sorrow following the fatal helicopter crash that claimed multiple lives.
Babu stated that he was deeply saddened by the passing of his colleague and other Kenyans, describing the incident as a profound loss not only to the affected families but also to Parliament and the nation at large.
“I am deeply saddened by the tragic passing of our colleague, Honourable Johanna Ngeno, and other Kenyans following the devastating helicopter crash. This is not only a profound loss to their families and loved ones, but also to Parliament and to the nation they served with dedication and integrity,” Babu wrote.

On his part, Ndindi Nyoro described the incident as traumatic, noting that the loss of six Kenyans in the crash was deeply painful.
He highlighted the late leader’s qualities, describing him as firm, courageous, forthright, and fully dedicated to the welfare of the country.
“It is very traumatic to learn about the tragic accident that happened today, where six Kenyans lost their lives. Hon. Johanna Ng’eno was a great man committed to the welfare of our country, Kenya. He was firm, courageous, forthright and dedicated. Very difficult to believe. Our thoughts are with the family of Hon. Johanna Ng’eno and the people of Emurua Dikirr during this very difficult and uncertain time. Poleni sana. May the peace that surpasses all understanding cover the family members of all six Kenyans. We are African, and Africa is our business,” Ndindi Nyoro wrote.

Seasoned politician
Born in 1972, Johana Ng’eno grew up in poverty in the Rift Valley.
His father worked as a cattle rustler, and the 1994 famine forced the family to move to Molo. As a boy, he walked up to 50 kilometres daily with 16 donkeys carrying charcoal and maize for sale.
He was actively involved in community and political initiatives, including women’s empowerment programmes such as a forum held in Narok County in July 2025.

His death has sent shockwaves across Nandi County and his constituency, where he was widely regarded as a committed and influential leader.
Investigators are examining the site to determine what led to the tragedy.
The crash has left the community in mourning and raised questions about helicopter safety during adverse weather conditions in the region.
