CS Chirchir issues safety advisory to parents ahead of schools reopening

Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport, Davis Chirchir, has issued a safety advisory to parents as they prepare for schools reopening, while urging parents to choose safe and compliant means of transport for their children.

In a statement on his official X account on Monday, January 5, 2026, Chirchir further called on parents to educate their children on the basics of road safety.

On his part, Chrichir, while urging parents to do the basic education on road sfety noted that teaching such as looking both ways before crossing and using designated crossings goes a long way in maintaining their safety on the roads.

“Choose safe and compliant transport for your children. -Teach children the basics of road safety; looking both ways before crossing and using designated crossings. The safety of our children is everyone’s responsibility,” Chirchir said.

On the other hand, CS Chirchir urged parents to report reckless behaviour to the authorities, including the National Police Service.

“Let us uphold our traffic laws, be mindful of one another, and ensure that every learner arrives safely at school and returns home at the end of the day. Report reckless behaviour to the authorities @ntsa_kenya, and @NPSOfficial_KE, your vigilance can save lives,” Chirchir added.

Karai accident

CS Chirchir’s remarks come just hours after ten people have been confirmed dead after a road accident at the Karai area on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

The incident occurred at around 1.00 am on Monday, January 5, 2026, when a Nairobi-bound Grenline bus collided head-on with a Nakuru-bound Nanyuki cabs shuttle at Karai area.

Nine people died on the spot, eight from the shuttle and a small child from the bus.

As of Monday morning, ten persons were confirmed dead, and five were in critical condition. Thirty-five people, among them five children, were received at the Naivasha hospital.

Notably, the incident occurred at the spot where former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo died weeks ago.

While confirming the incident, the Naivasha Sub- County Police Commander, Wilson Sigei, said the bus driver was overtaking when he encountered the saloon car.

“We are observing this stretch of the road as most drivers are speeding here,” Sigei said.
