Hailing from the Kipsigis subtribe of the wider Kalenjin ethnic group, Ng’eno has been a fierce critic of those in power and a staunch defender of people’s liberties and inalienable rights.

Outspokenness

His outspokenness on land issues has defined much of his public and controversial stance.

His most controversial moments came in April 2025 during a series of violent clashes and killings in Ang’ata Barikoi, Narok County, where several residents lost their lives amid a bitter land dispute.

Dramatic police face-off

In a dramatic face-off captured on camera, Ng’eno confronted a group of heavily armed police officers, demanding explanations for why they were killing people. The officers appeared to back down as the legislator insisted on speaking to their seniors amid the tense standoff.

This incident showcased his lifelong pattern of political boldness and defiance.

Multiple arrests

The MP has frequently found himself on the wrong side of law enforcement, arrested multiple times over allegations linked to his strong criticisms of the government or ethnic-related statements. Thanks to his firebrand style of politics, notable incidents include:

In 2019, he was arrested while protesting against evictions from the Mau forest, which sparked clashes and accusations of leading illegal gatherings.

He also faced a dramatic arrest at his home in Kilgoris in 2020.

His unafraid stance saw him once extend bold advice to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, at the time, the fallout between the DP and his boss, William Ruto, had started to show, years after the ascent of the Kenya Kwanza government in 2022.

In a daring address on an issue few dared to touch—the then-worsening relationship between the two—Ng’eno implored Gachagua to stay put and ignore sideshows being peddled by people intent on soiling the friendship.

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya recalled a past incident during the Mau forest reclamation when he served as Regional Commissioner of the Rift Valley.

According to Natembeya, Ngeno’s vehement opposition to the Mau eviction exercise prompted his aforementioned arrest.

Unknown to the MP, the RC disclosed how he saved the then-controversial MP from bodily harm by transporting him at night to a different location over what he described as rogue officers who had hired some rascals to molest the public officer.

“The MP always claims that the incident was meant to kill him, but we were actually saving him from the humiliation he was about to undergo,” Natembeya recounted.
