Cancer patients: Why approvals may differ between SHA beneficiaries

The Social Health Authority has issued an explainer on why approvals may differ between cancer patients who are under the Social Health Authority Insurance.

In a statement on SHA’s official X account on Teusday January 20, 2026, SHA explained why approvals may differ between SHA beneficiaries while looking at how benefit packages are structured.

According to SHA, while two patients may share a broad diagnosis such as “breast cancer,” their clinical profiles, diagnostic needs, and treatment pathways are rarely identical.

The Authority has further explained that Cancer care is personalised and depends on several factors.

“While two patients may share a broad diagnosis such as “breast cancer,” their clinical profiles, diagnostic needs, and treatment pathways are rarely identical. Cancer care is personalised and depends on several factors, ” SHA said.

According to SHA the factors includes extent of prior benefit utilization, which determines the remaining available balance within the annual oncology package.

Also stage of care is considered when doing the Cancer approvals, as it applies to diagnostic work-up, active treatment, or follow-up.

“Extent of prior benefit utilization, which determines the remaining available balance within the annual oncology package. Stage of care, whether diagnostic work-up, active treatment, or follow-up,” SHA explained.

SHA has further explained that clinical complexity, including tumour characteristics and whether tests are required sequentially or concurrently.

“Clinical complexity, including tumor characteristics and whether tests are required sequentially or concurrently.Completeness and structure of the pre-authorization request submitted by the healthcare provider,” SHA explained.

Meanwhile, the choice of health provider is a factor towards approval.SHA reveals that beneficiaries are free to seek care at any SHA-contracted cancer facility.

As a result, differences in approvals do not imply preferential treatment but reflect the application of uniform benefit rules to differing clinical circumstances.

“Choice of healthcare provider, noting that beneficiaries are free to seek care at any SHA-contracted cancer facility. As a result, differences in approvals do not imply preferential treatment, but reflect the application of uniform benefit rules to differing clinical circumstances,” SHA stated.
