48% complete: KeRRA gives construction update on key 65km Narok road project
By Dan Kauna, August 8, 2026The Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) has released a progress update on the ongoing upgrading of the Nkuswani-Naikara-Leshuta-Morijo Road in Narok County, confirming that overall construction work has reached 48 per cent completion.
In an update posted on X, the state roads agency informed the public that its technical teams remain on site to push the project forward.
22 Kilometres of tarmac completed
The agency confirmed that a major section of the rural road has already been paved to bitumen standards. Giving specific figures on the progress made on the ground so far, KeRRA stated, “22Km laying of tarmac iko already DONE on the Nkuswani–Naikara–Leshuta–Morijo Road, and works are now at 48 per cent completion.”
The project, which was advertised under Tender No. RWC 666 with bidding closing on February 4, 2025, covers a total of 65 kilometres. This scope includes the main 60-kilometre corridor connecting Nkuswani, Naikara, Leshuta, and Morijo, as well as a 5-kilometre spur road leading to Soipan Primary School.
Four photos published alongside the official statement give a clear look at the ongoing earthworks and paving activities across the project corridor.
One picture shows road workers dressed in red and yellow protective overalls working next to an asphalt paver and a tipper truck to lay fresh black tarmac.
Another displays a heavy roller compacting a widened gravel section under open skies, while a third shows a yellow motor grader levelling dirt along a stretch lined with power poles and rural greenery.
Boosting local trade and mobility
The photos also capture the local environment along the project route. A fourth image shows four giraffes walking single-file across a completed, freshly paved section of the road, showing how the infrastructure passes through the wildlife-rich area of Narok County.
KeRRA emphasized that upgrading the road will support local business activities and make daily movement easier for residents across the region. The authority noted, “Step by step, we’re building roads that connect people, biashara, and opportunities.”
The upgrading of the Nkuswani-Naikara-Leshuta-Morijo Road from earth standards to bitumen will bring relief to local communities, livestock keepers, and traders in Narok County.
Converting the stretch into an all-weather road will shorten travel times, reduce vehicle maintenance costs, and ensure reliable transport during heavy rains, when dirt roads in the area often become muddy and impassable.
