Muyoti explains what went wrong in Police’s draw against title hopeful Gor Mahia

Kenya Police coach Nicholas Muyoti has addressed the team’s frailties that led to the team dropping points during the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League tie against Gor Mahia.

The reigning champions’ title defence was effectively curtailed, almost turning the party poopers after slowing Gor Mahia’s march to the league title.

Speaking after the Sunday, May 10, 2026, clash, the gaffer decried the approach to retreat back to their defence, as it led to Gor’s equaliser snatching a crucial point.

Got it wrong

“We did not get the second half right. We retreated back for a long period and invited Gor Mahia to us. We were not supposed to do that, and it is what we need to work on. We laced the punch in the final third, and we also have to address that,” he explained.

Despite the setback, Muyoti backed the team to fully grasp his philosophy with better training sessions and improvements.

The season is not over for us. We vowed to fight till the end, and we will keep to that with continued practice until we get it right,” he added.

During the 1-1 draw, Ebenezer Assifuah stepped up from the bench to snatch the point after Police had taken a first-half lead through Brian Otieno.

His remarks were mirrored by his nemesis on the opposite dugout, Charles Akonnor, who admitted facing it tough against the reigning champions.

The Ghanaian hailed the impact of the substitutes en route to the win that saw Gor move within reach of wrapping up the league title race.

Police resistance

“We had ideas of what to do in the second half against an opponent who never gave us too much space. They sat deep and defended well against us. The goals were not coming, but we managed to nick it late, which was good for us,” he said regarding the details of the match.

“Each and every player comes in with instructions and additional efforts from the bench. Sometimes you win games from the bench; it is how matches are won. Players like Assifuah and Ben Stanley did a good job for us. This is a good team; in situations when things are difficult and you manage to get the goals, it shows a good sign of the team,” he added.

Gor Mahia now needs only six points to be crowned the 2026 league champions for an unprecedented 22nd time.
