GTA 6 preview: 10 biggest reveals from Rockstar’s new gameplay

By , August 28, 2026

Rockstar Games has finally given fans a detailed look at Grand Theft Auto 6, releasing a 26-minute extended preview after more than 18 months since the previous official glimpse.

The footage premiered on Netflix on Thursday, August 27, 2026, before being released on Rockstar’s official platforms. Captured entirely from gameplay on PlayStation 5, the preview offered the clearest look yet at the world of Leonida, the characters, police system and activities players can expect when the game launches on November 19, 2026.

Here are 10 of the biggest reveals from the showcase and accompanying previews.

Jason and Lucia

GTA 6 will centre on Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, a criminal couple whose relationship sits at the heart of the story.

The two can work together during missions, but players will also be able to switch between them at different points. Footage showed Jason helping Lucia escape from a building, highlighting how the two protagonists can be used together during action sequences.

Rockstar has described their story as a Bonnie-and-Clyde-style relationship set against the criminal underworld of Vice City.

Switch characters

The character-switching system returns but has been expanded from GTA 5.

Players can move between Jason and Lucia while they are together or operating separately. The system can also become useful during police chases, with the pair able to split up and force officers to divide their attention.

If one character escapes while the other remains in danger, players can continue controlling the free character rather than simply restarting the sequence.

Six-star police

The infamous six-star wanted level is returning.

Unlike previous games where police response could feel more predictable, GTA 6 introduces a system in which law enforcement can track specific information about a suspect, including their face, clothing and vehicle.

Players may therefore have to change clothes, abandon a known vehicle or alter their appearance to reduce police attention.

Police remember faces

One of the biggest changes is how police investigations work.

A crime first has to be witnessed or detected before officers are alerted. Once a suspect is identified, police can retain information about the person’s appearance and vehicle.

That means simply running around a corner may not be enough to escape. Players will have to think about what the police actually know about them.

A massive Leonida

The game takes players beyond Vice City into the wider fictional state of Leonida, Rockstar’s version of Florida.

The extended footage showed busy streets, beaches, rural areas, waterways and other environments, reinforcing the scale and variety of the open world.

Reports based on Rockstar’s previews also suggest the world is significantly larger and more densely populated than previous entries.

A more living world

Rockstar has packed the environment with more detailed pedestrians and activities.

The game features a wide range of optional activities, including water-based activities, sports and interactions that have little to do with the main criminal storyline.

The idea is to make Leonida feel like a place where things continue happening even when players are not following a mission.

Characters can change

Jason and Lucia are not completely static characters.

Reports from Rockstar’s previews indicate that their physical appearance can change depending on how players treat them, including factors such as food, exercise and rest.

This brings back some of the life-simulation elements seen in earlier GTA games while giving the protagonists more personality beyond their scripted storylines.

More ways to escape

The preview showed missions that can be approached in different ways.

Players may have multiple routes when escaping a building or police pursuit, while some vehicle sequences allow them to decide whether to drive or take a shooting position.

Rockstar is also making movement more fluid, giving Jason and Lucia more options when running, climbing and moving through tight spaces.

Social media is part of GTA 6

GTA 6 will bring social media into its fictional world.

The game uses social platforms as part of its satire of modern online culture, while characters and events can feed into the wider digital world of Leonida.

That fits Rockstar’s long-running approach of using fictional media to parody real-life society and internet culture.

Stunning visuals

Perhaps the most obvious reveal was how far Rockstar has pushed the game’s graphics.

The preview showed highly detailed characters, realistic lighting, crowded environments, vehicles and cinematic weather and water effects.

Rockstar said the extended look was captured entirely from in-game footage on a PlayStation 5, giving players a direct look at what the game can achieve on current-generation hardware.

The wait is now entering its final stretch. Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
