Ksh100 shopping: Why Kenyans are flocking to Chinese retail stores

From Mia Duck, China Square, China Village, Panda Mart, and other emerging outlets, Chinese retail stores are rapidly becoming a trend as their appeal is simply based on low prices, endless variety, and almost everything under one roof.
From Nairobi to the counties
The expansion is also moving beyond Nairobi, with retailers opening branches in almost every other town near you. For shoppers dealing with rising household expenses, price remains one of the biggest attractions.
A product that might cost significantly more in a conventional shop can sometimes be found for much less in a Chinese retail outlet. For young shoppers particularly, the stores offer an opportunity to experiment with fashion, accessories and home décor without spending heavily.
Although the stores are often associated with the Ksh100 bargain culture, their appeal extends far beyond the cheapest products.
Clothing, shoes, handbags, cosmetics, jewellery, kitchenware, electronics, stationery and home accessories are increasingly part of the shopping mix.
For fashion-conscious consumers, the stores also provide an inexpensive way of keeping up with rapidly changing trends.
The social-media effect
Videos showing shoppers discovering new branches, bargain finds and “things worth buying” in Chinese stores regularly circulate on TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and X.
The rapid expansion of Chinese retailers has also created anxiety among some Kenyan traders who argue that they cannot compete with the prices and scale of large retail outlets.
