How students can manage anxiety ahead of KMTC September intake

The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has opened the application portal for the September 2026 intake at Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) campuses across the country.
The placement agency said applications will close on the August 11, 2026 portal.
“To all prospective medical students, your time is now. The application for the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) September 2026 intake is officially opened through the KUCCPS student portal. This is your chance to start your journey into a career in healthcare. Don’t wait, log in and apply now!” KUCCPS said in a notice.
For many students, the weeks leading up to admission are filled with uncertainty. Questions about placement, finances, and adapting to a new learning environment can be overwhelming. While these concerns are valid, there are practical ways to manage the stress and prepare with confidence.
1. Accept that waiting can be stressful
Waiting to know whether you have secured a place at KMTC can be emotionally draining. You may find yourself checking your phone or the KUCCPS portal repeatedly, comparing yourself with friends, or worrying about what comes next.
Instead of letting uncertainty consume you, remind yourself that the placement process takes time. Focus on what you can control, such as preparing your documents, researching your preferred course, and planning your next steps.
2. Create a financial plan early
One of the biggest sources of anxiety for many students is money. Even before reporting, thoughts about tuition fees, accommodation, transport, uniforms, meals, and learning materials can be stressful.
Rather than worrying without a plan, sit down with your parents or guardians and discuss the expected costs. Identify areas where you can save money, explore available scholarships or bursaries, and prepare a realistic budget.
Having a financial plan may not eliminate every challenge, but it can reduce uncertainty and help you feel more in control.

3. Stop comparing your journey with others
It’s easy to feel left behind when classmates announce their placements, share shopping lists, or post exciting updates on social media.
Remember that every student’s journey is different. Some may receive confirmation earlier, while others may face delays. Comparing yourself to others often increases anxiety without changing your circumstances.
Focus on preparing for your own journey instead.
4. Learn about the KMTC experience
Fear often comes from the unknown. If you are worried about life at KMTC, spend time learning what to expect.
Read about your chosen course, watch student experiences online, speak to current or former KMTC students, and familiarise yourself with the college’s academic expectations.
Understanding how lectures, practical sessions, and clinical placements work can make the transition feel less intimidating.
5. Prepare yourself for a new learning environment
Medical training is different from secondary school. You will be expected to study independently, participate in practical sessions, and take greater responsibility for your learning.
Instead of fearing these changes, view them as opportunities to grow. Every healthcare professional once started as a first-year student, learning the same skills and adapting to the same challenges.
