Key difference between soy, beeswax, and paraffin candles

Candles do more than provide light. They can create a relaxing atmosphere, add fragrance to a room, and serve as decorative pieces in homes.
However, not all candles are made the same. The type of wax used affects how long a candle burns, how it smells, and even its environmental impact. The three most common types are soy, beeswax, and paraffin.
Soy candles
Soy candles are made from soybean oil, making them a popular choice for people looking for a plant-based option. They are known for burning slowly, which means they often last longer than paraffin candles of the same size.
Soy wax also produces very little soot when burnt correctly, helping to keep walls, ceilings, and candle containers cleaner.
Because soy wax melts at a lower temperature, it releases fragrance gradually, making it ideal for creating a subtle, long-lasting scent in a room.
However, soy candles are generally more expensive than paraffin candles and can become softer in very hot weather.
Beeswax candles
Beeswax candles are made from natural wax produced by honeybees. They are among the oldest types of candles and are valued for their natural golden color and mild honey-like scent.
One of the biggest advantages of beeswax candles is their long burn time. They burn slowly and drip less when kept away from drafts. Unlike scented candles, beeswax has its own naturally pleasant aroma, meaning it often does not require added fragrances.
Beeswax candles are also considered one of the most eco-friendly options because beeswax is a renewable resource when harvested responsibly. Their main drawback is cost, as they are usually the most expensive of the three types.
Paraffin candles
Paraffin candles are the most widely available and are commonly found in supermarkets, gift shops, and home décor stores. Paraffin wax is a by-product of petroleum refining, making it less expensive to produce.
One reason paraffin candles remain popular is their excellent scent throw. They can hold and release fragrance effectively, making them a favourite for strongly scented candles. They also come in a wide range of colours, shapes, and designs.
However, paraffin candles may produce more soot than soy or beeswax candles, especially if the wick is too long or the candle burns in a draft. Regular wick trimming can help reduce soot and improve the quality of the burn.
