Easy ways to eliminate kitchen odours

The kitchen is often considered the heart of the home, but lingering odours from cooking, food waste, or dampness can quickly make it feel less inviting.

Whether it is the smell of fried food, fish, onions, or a full rubbish bin, unpleasant kitchen odours can stick around long after the meal is over.

Fortunately, keeping your kitchen smelling fresh does not require expensive products. A few simple habits can make a big difference.

Take out the rubbish regularly

One of the most common sources of kitchen odours is the rubbish bin. Food scraps left sitting for days can quickly produce unpleasant smells.

Empty your bin frequently, especially after disposing of meat, seafood, dairy products, or fruit peels. Washing the bin with warm soapy water every few weeks can also help prevent odour build-up.

Clean the sink and drain

Food particles and grease can collect in the sink drain, creating unpleasant smells over time.

Flush the drain with hot water regularly and scrub the sink thoroughly. You can also pour a mixture of baking soda followed by white vinegar down the drain, let it fizz for a few minutes, and then rinse with hot water to help remove residue and freshen the drain.

Wipe down cooking surfaces

Grease splatters and food spills on countertops, stovetops, and backsplashes can trap odours if left uncleaned.

After each meal, wipe surfaces with warm water and a mild cleaning solution to prevent smells from lingering.

Clean your refrigerator

Forgotten leftovers and spoiled food are often hidden sources of unpleasant kitchen smells.

Check your refrigerator regularly, discard expired items, and wipe shelves and drawers with a gentle cleaning solution. Storing food in airtight containers also helps reduce odours.

Don’t forget the sponge and dishcloth

Kitchen sponges and dishcloths absorb moisture and food particles, making them ideal places for bacteria to grow.

Wash dishcloths frequently and replace worn-out sponges regularly. Allow them to dry completely between uses.

Ventilate while cooking

Proper airflow helps remove cooking smells before they settle throughout your home.

Turn on your extractor fan if you have one, or open windows and doors while cooking to improve air circulation.

Freshen the air naturally

Instead of relying only on air fresheners, try natural ways to keep your kitchen smelling pleasant.

Simmer slices of lemon, orange, cinnamon sticks, or cloves in a pot of water for a refreshing aroma. Fresh herbs such as rosemary or mint can also add a pleasant scent.

Store food properly

Strong-smelling foods such as onions, garlic, fish, and leftovers should be kept in tightly sealed containers.

Proper food storage not only keeps your kitchen smelling fresh but also helps preserve food quality.
