A carpet can make a home feel warm, comfortable and inviting; however, over time it can also trap dust, food particles, pet hair, moisture and other substances that cause unpleasant smells.

Regular cleaning and proper drying also help prevent the growth of mould and mildew, which are common causes of musty smells.

Keeping your carpet smelling fresh does not have to be expensive; simple household items like baking soda and white vinegar, combined with regular vacuuming, prompt spill cleanup and proper ventilation, can effectively remove everyday odours.

The best way to prevent unpleasant smells is through consistent maintenance. By cleaning spills quickly, keeping moisture under control and vacuuming regularly, you can enjoy a cleaner, fresher home without relying on costly cleaning products.

Here are practical ways to remove carpet odours without buying expensive products.

1. Sprinkle baking soda on the carpet

Baking soda is one of the most effective and affordable natural deodorisers. Instead of masking smells, it helps absorb odours trapped in carpet fibres.

Lightly sprinkle baking soda over the carpet and allow it to sit for several hours, or overnight if possible. Afterwards, vacuum the carpet thoroughly to remove the powder and the odours it has absorbed.

2. Vacuum regularly

Many unpleasant smells come from dirt, crumbs, dust and pet hair that accumulate over time.

Vacuum high-traffic areas at least once or twice a week and more often if you have children or pets. Regular vacuuming helps prevent odours from building up while also extending the life of your carpet.

3. Clean spills immediately

Food and drink spills are among the biggest causes of carpet odours.

Blot fresh spills using a clean cloth or paper towel instead of rubbing them, which can push the stain deeper into the fibres. Clean the area with a small amount of mild detergent mixed with water, then blot dry with a clean towel.

4. Use white vinegar to neutralise odours

White vinegar is a natural deodoriser that can help eliminate lingering smells.

Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle and lightly mist the affected area. Avoid soaking the carpet; allow it to air dry completely.

Although vinegar has a strong smell initially, the scent usually disappears as it dries, taking many unpleasant odours with it.

Always test the solution on a small hidden section of the carpet first to ensure it does not affect the colour.

5. Let fresh air in

Proper ventilation plays an important role in keeping carpets fresh.

Open windows and doors whenever possible to improve air circulation. Fresh air helps moisture evaporate more quickly and reduces the risk of mould and mildew developing in damp carpets.

6. Dry the carpet thoroughly

A damp carpet is one of the leading causes of unpleasant smells.

After cleaning, ensure the carpet dries completely by increasing airflow with open windows or fans. Avoid placing furniture back on the carpet until it is fully dry.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that controlling indoor moisture is important for preventing mould growth, which thrives in damp environments.
