Why we hiccup: The body mystery science cannot solve

A second later, a loud “hic” escapes your throat, interrupting your conversation. Hiccups happen to almost everyone, yet few people understand the rapid chain reaction taking place inside the body when they strike.
What triggers the hiccup reflex
The journey begins with two main nerves running through the chest and neck, known as the phrenic and vagus nerves. Eating too fast, swallowing hot food, or drinking carbonated drinks can stretch the stomach and irritate these nerve pathways.
Once irritated, the nerves send a rapid signal to the brainstem, which instantly commands the breathing muscles to contract unexpectedly.

As research published in the Journal of Neurogastroenterology and Motility notes, “Hiccup is the sudden onset of erratic diaphragmatic and intercostal muscle contraction and immediately followed by laryngeal closure.”
This sudden muscle twitch forces an abrupt intake of air. Within a fraction of a second, the glottis, a small muscle valve in the throat covering the vocal cords, snaps shut to block the air.
That sudden closure causes the vocal cords to vibrate, creating the familiar sound. The entire loop occurs within milliseconds, leaving the brain with no conscious control to stop it.
The mystery behind the lack of a cure
Despite hiccups being one of the most common human experiences, medical science still does not fully understand why we have them.
Some researchers suggest that hiccups are an evolutionary leftover from ancient water-breathing animals. Others believe it is a reflex from infancy that helped keep milk out of a baby’s lungs.

However, none of these theories has been proven.
Doctors have also not developed a single guaranteed cure. Home remedies like drinking ice-cold water, holding your breath, or swallowing sugar sometimes work because they distract the vagus nerve and reset the neural reflex.
Yet, standard medicine offers no single cure for stubborn cases. Because hiccups are harmless and usually go away on their own, medical research rarely receives funding to investigate them.
