How walking on beach sand burns more calories than a tarmac stroll
By Dan Kauna, August 16, 2026A relaxed morning walk along the ocean beaches in Mombasa, Diani, or Malindi feels effortless, but your body is actually getting a serious workout.
Moving across soft, dry sand changes how your feet and legs work compared to walking on hard tarmac or estate roads. Every time your foot hits the soft ground, the sand shifts beneath you.
Instead of bouncing off a hard surface, your legs have to push harder to propel you forward with every single step.
The calorie-burning power of soft sand
That constant shifting underfoot means your body works much harder to keep moving. Research published in the Journal of Experimental Biology confirms this added physical effort.

Investigators found that “walking on sand requires 2.1–2.7 times more energy expenditure than does walking on a hard surface at the same speed” due to the extra muscle effort needed to navigate yielding ground.
Because your foot sinks into the loose sand, you lose the natural forward spring you normally get on paved paths. Your calves, thighs, and hips have to stay fully engaged to carry you along the shore.
A simple half-hour stroll along the oceanfront can burn more than double the calories of a walk over hard ground, making a simple holiday stroll an unexpectedly effective fitness session.
Natural strength for ankles and feet
Beyond shedding extra calories, walking on uneven sand forces the hidden support muscles in your feet and ankles to wake up. On flat asphalt, your main leg muscles do almost all the heavy lifting while the smaller foot muscles stay relaxed.

Tiny muscles inside your foot arch contract repeatedly to keep you balanced on the shifting surface.
This constant work builds stronger arches and stabilises the joints in your lower legs. The adjustments your body makes to keep upright also train the ligaments around your ankles, protecting them against twists and sprains down the road.
For Kenyans enjoying a coastal getaway, taking daily barefoot walks along the beach is an easy way to strengthen your lower body without setting foot in a gym.
