Former MCA wants Mbeere South to have its own water firm, blasts EWASCO

Former Mavuria Ward Member of County Assembly in Embu County, Joseph Nyagah Mwaniki, alias Muthami, has rallied for the establishment of an Mbeere-based water firm.
Speaking alongside other leaders at the Kauraciri grounds in Mbeere South on Thursday, February 19, 2026, during a food distribution exercise, Muthami stated that EWASCO has become a thorn in the flesh of residents.
The event was graced by Public Service CS Geoffrey Ruku, days after he assured the nation that the government has enough food reserves to deal with the biting drought and famine.
He went on to state that it is only a matter of time before the region forms its own company.
Muthami spoke when Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku visited the area for a relief food distribution event at Kauraciri Stadium.

Mbeere South water crisis
According to him, residents have unanimously expressed dissatisfaction with Embu Water and Sanitation Company, commonly known as EWASCO, which operates under Embu County, led by Governor Cecily Mbarire.
“Our able CS, our people have told us that, including those who spoke before, who have unanimously said that they have a problem with EWASCO. It is a matter of time before we have our own firm, MBEWASCO, which will be called Mbeere Water and Sanitation Company, where we will be able to read our own bills without stress,” Nyagah said.
He noted that residents of Mbeere South have long struggled with water access, billing concerns, and service delivery issues.
Nyagah explained that the proposed MBEWASCO would be locally managed, allowing the community to have direct oversight over water supply, billing and maintenance.
He emphasised that water is a basic need and residents deserve reliable, affordable and transparent services.

Kamburu dam water project
Nyagah also gave a detailed update on the progress of the mega water project being constructed from Kamburu Dam, which is the head of the project that will see Mbeere residents benefit from water.
He said the project is nearing completion and will serve the entire Mbeere South region.
Nyagah also assured residents that the area MP, Nebart Muriuki, will do what it takes to ensure that all stalled projects in the area are completed before the next poll, where residents will have a chance to exercise their democratic right to either retain him or give another person a chance to lead.

He assured residents that households will soon begin receiving clean water directly from their taps.
“It is a matter of time before people start drinking water from their taps in their homes,” he said.
The leaders present echoed his sentiments, saying that access to water will transform livelihoods, improve hygiene, and reduce the burden on women and children who often walk long distances to fetch water.
As the push for MBEWASCO gains momentum, residents now wait to see whether the proposal will receive the necessary approvals to become a reality.
