Step-by-step guide to making homemade cinnamon rolls
Homemade cinnamon rolls are one of the most comforting baked treats you can prepare in your kitchen. Soft, fluffy, and filled with a sweet cinnamon-sugar swirl, they are perfect for breakfast, brunch, or even as a warm dessert.
While they may look complex, making cinnamon rolls from scratch becomes simple when broken down into clear steps.
Preparing the dough
To begin, prepare the dough by combining warm milk with sugar and instant yeast in a large bowl. Allow it to rest for a few minutes until it becomes slightly foamy, which shows that the yeast is active.
Once ready, mix in melted butter, a fresh egg, and salt. Gradually add the flour while stirring until a soft dough forms. The dough should be slightly sticky but manageable.

Next, knead the dough (Kukanda unga) on a lightly floured surface for about 8 to 10 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic. This step is important as it develops the gluten structure that gives cinnamon rolls their soft and fluffy texture.
After kneading, place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean cloth, and leave it in a warm place for about an hour or until it doubles in size.
Preparing the filling
While the dough is rising, prepare the filling by mixing brown sugar and ground cinnamon in a small bowl. This simple mixture is what gives cinnamon rolls their signature sweet and aromatic flavour.
Once the dough has risen, gently punch it down to release air and roll it out into a large rectangle on a clean surface.

Spread softened butter evenly across the surface, then sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture generously over it, ensuring full coverage so every bite is flavorful.
After the filling is added, carefully roll the dough tightly from one end to form a log shape. Using a sharp knife or dental floss, slice the log into equal portions.
Place the rolls into a greased baking dish, leaving a small gap between each piece, and allow them to rise again for about 30 minutes until they become puffy.
Baking the cinnamon rolls
Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and bake the cinnamon rolls for 20 to 25 minutes, or until they turn golden brown and fully cooked through.
If you don’t have an oven, you can cook cinnamon rolls in a covered pan on very low heat for about 25–35 minutes until they are soft and cooked through
While they bake, prepare a simple glaze by mixing powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth and creamy.
Once the rolls are slightly cooled, drizzle the glaze over the top while they are still warm so it melts slightly into the layers.
