5 simple ways to unclog a sink without tools
A clogged sink is one of those household problems that can stop your day in its tracks. Before reaching for a plunger or calling a plumber, there are simple methods you can try using things you likely already have at home. Here are five easy ways to unclog your sink without any special tools.
Boiling water
One of the easiest ways to tackle a clog is with boiling water. Simply bring a pot of water to a boil and carefully pour it down the drain in stages.
The heat can dissolve grease, soap, or food buildup that’s causing the blockage. Repeat a few times if necessary. This method works best for slow drains rather than complete blockages.
Baking soda and vinegar
Baking soda and vinegar create a natural chemical reaction that can help break down clogs. Pour about half a cup of baking soda into the drain, followed by half a cup of white vinegar.
Cover the drain with a plug or cloth to contain the fizzing reaction. Wait 10–15 minutes, then flush the drain with hot water. This is a safe, eco-friendly alternative to chemical cleaners.
Dish soap slide
Pour a generous amount of liquid dish soap directly into the drain. Let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes to coat the inside of the pipes.

Then, flush the drain with hot water. The soap helps lubricate the pipes, making it easier for grease, grime, and minor blockages to slide through.
Wet cloth method
For slow-draining sinks, blocking the overflow and sealing the drain with a wet cloth, then filling the sink with a small amount of water and removing the cloth quickly, can create pressure to push the clog through.
It’s a simple trick that uses water pressure to clear minor blockages.
With these five simple methods, you can often clear a clogged sink quickly without any tools.
Use a wire coat hanger
A wire coat hanger can become an impromptu drain-cleaning tool. Straighten a metal hanger, leaving a small hook at one end, and use it to fish out hair or other debris lodged in the drain.

A wire coat hanger is simply the thin, bendable metal frame used to hang clothes. Its flexibility and strength make it perfect for reaching into tight spaces where clogs often hide.
Be gentle to avoid damaging the pipes.
