How to unlock a locked phone or forgotten password
By William Muthama, December 26, 2025Getting locked out of a mobile phone after forgetting a password, PIN, or pattern is a common problem affecting many users.
Whether caused by frequent password changes, long periods of inactivity or failed attempts, a locked phone can disrupt communication, work and access to vital information.
Fortunately, phone manufacturers and service providers offer several legal and safe recovery options for genuine owners.
Use account recovery
For most Android and iPhone users, the easiest way to unlock a phone is through the linked account.
On Android devices, users can sign in using the Google account previously connected to the phone. After multiple failed unlock attempts, the device may prompt the user to verify their Google credentials. Once verified, the phone allows a reset of the screen lock.

Apple users can recover access by signing in with their Apple ID through iCloud or another trusted Apple device. Using the “Find My iPhone” feature, owners can erase the device remotely and set it up again with a new passcode.
This method requires remembering the account email and password used during initial setup.
Factory reset option
If account recovery fails, a factory reset is another option, though it comes at a cost.
A factory reset wipes all data on the device, returning it to its original state. On Android, this is done by powering off the phone, then pressing a combination of buttons (usually power and volume) to access recovery mode. From there, users can select “Wipe data/factory reset.”

For iPhones, a reset can be done using iTunes or Finder on a computer after connecting the device with a cable.
After resetting, the phone will still require the original Google or Apple account details to activate, a security feature meant to prevent theft.
Visit the service centre
When digital recovery options fail, authorised service centres remain the safest solution.
Mobile network shops, manufacturer service centres or licensed repair outlets can help verify ownership and guide users through official unlocking processes. Users are often required to present proof of purchase, identification, or account details.
Experts warn against third-party unlocking software found online, noting that many are scams or can permanently damage the phone.
With smartphones holding sensitive personal data, security systems are designed to be strict. While forgetting a password can be frustrating, following approved recovery steps ensures the device remains secure and functional.
