Rish Kamunge explains why couples without a marriage certificate are no different from singles

TikToker Rish Kamunge has spoken out on why women who are married but lack formal marriage certificates are effectively no better than single individuals.
Speaking in a video shared on her TikTok page on Saturday, March 28, 2026, Kamunge emphasised that being married without a certificate renders the union almost meaningless.
She argued that such relationships are comparable to situations where a woman is “kept” by a man or a man supports a woman informally, without any legal recognition. In these cases, she noted, partners endure the same stresses and lack the protections that come with a formally recognised marriage.
“If you are married and do not have a marriage certificate, you are useless. You should know that there is no difference between you and a woman who stays with a man just to be provided for or a man who supports a woman informally without being married,” she said.

Kamunge used a striking analogy to illustrate her point, saying that a woman in an uncertified marriage is like a domestic worker performing household duties.
“You are like a laundry lady,” she explained, “there is no difference between you and that washing lady who comes to that house to wash clothes. You are all just the same.”
She added that women in informal arrangements, sometimes referred to as side relationships, may experience less daily stress than those in uncertified marriages because they are not burdened by the expectations and responsibilities that accompany a legally recognised union.
“You are all the same. A marriage certificate is very important. In fact, a woman who is kept by a man or is in a side relationship may be better off because she is not stressed by him every day,” she added.
God-fearing man
Previously, K24 Digital reported that Kamunge had expressed a strong desire to get married, confidently declaring that a happy and fulfilling marriage is part of her destiny.
She explained that she is not discouraged by those who claim to dislike or feel disillusioned by marriage, insisting that her own journey will be different.
“I don’t care how much people hate marriage or how disgusted they are by it, but all I know is that I am going to get married,” she stated.
Rish stated that she is confident she will not only get married but will do so successfully, describing her future union as one that will be stable and fulfilling.
She expressed hope that she will find a supportive husband and build a strong family together, adding that she envisions having well-raised, educated and beautiful children.
“And I am not just going to get married, I am going to get married well, and I am going to have a supportive husband. I will have good children, beautiful, educated children,” she said.

The content creator further shared her belief that marriage and a good family are part of her destiny, emphasising that she is intentional about speaking positively into her future.
She went on to express hopes for a long and stable family life, stating that she wishes for her husband and children to live long lives.
“Marriage is my portion. A good family is my portion. My husband will not die early, and my children also will not die early. My children will bury me, not the other way around,” Rish said.
