Polo Kimani hits out at modern gospel musicians over spiritual weakness

Social media personality Polo Kimani hit out at modern gospel artists, saying their weak spiritual influence has left the country vulnerable.

In an X post on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, he compared today’s gospel musicians with artists from his youth, praising Christina Shusho, Boniface Mwaitege, and Rose Muhando for confronting evil through their music.

Kimani said past gospel artistes “seriously challenged the devil” and had a strong spiritual presence in their songs, while today’s performers fail to have the same impact.

When I was growing up, we had serious artists, Christina Shusho ndio huyo anaomba yesu macho aone, and Boniface Mwaitege, on the other hand, is telling me not to commit suicide because what I lost wasn’t mine, haikua riziki yangu. Rose Muhando ako nyuma anapiga saitan Sweep, anamuuliza shetani umepitia wapi ukaingia maisha yangu. She used to lecture the devil seriously. The devil had no chance,” Kimani wrote

Modern gospel under fire

Kimani singled out Guardian Angel, Bahati, and Willy Paul, suggesting that personal choices and changes in style have made their music less powerful spiritually.

He described how some contemporary gospel artists no longer confront spiritual challenges in their music.

He added that Bahati seems uncertain about his role in his marriage, while Willy Paul, once very promising, had moments of despair, including singing about wanting to take his own life, before changing the direction of his music.

Kimani also highlighted the lack of spiritually strong defences in the country. “How can the devil not beat us with such a weak defence? This is how the devil managed to get to the State House. Jesus gave up on this country long ago,” he said.

He suggested that those seeking true salvation consider moving to Rwanda, praising gospel artist Israel Mbonyi for maintaining a strong connection with God.

Reflecting his frustration with the current state of gospel music, Kimani concluded his post with, “Khabusie! 🤧,” emphasising his disappointment in how spiritual messages are delivered today and the effect it has on the nation.
