Padre Michael Watenga explains importance of celebrating Easter

Anglican priest from the Diocese of Kitale, Padre Michael Watenga, popularly known as Padre wa Wote, has reminded his followers of the significance of Easter and why the season should be celebrated with devotion.
In a heartfelt message shared on Instagram on Friday, April 3, 2026, Watenga emphasised the spiritual importance of Christ’s resurrection, describing it as a symbol of victory over sin, death, and life’s challenges.
The priest highlighted that Easter is not just a festive occasion but a time to reflect on faith, renewal, and the transformative power of God’s grace.
“He will rise from the dead. Christ’s resurrection is very important because it represents victory over sin, over death, and over challenges,” he said.
Padre Michael Watenga also shared plans to bring his ministry closer to his followers during the Easter season.
He revealed that he will be visiting a popular hotel in Migori County to preach and share the gospel, bringing his unique blend of faith and engagement with communities directly to the people.
The priest encouraged fans to embrace the message of Easter fully, noting that it represents a period of hope, spiritual awakening, and rejoicing in God’s promises.
“Hello, Padre wa Wote here. Migori County, are you ready? I will be visiting a popular hotel. This gospel is now on fire, and I am bringing it to you at a time when we are preparing to receive Christ,” he added.

According to Watenga, his mission during this season is to inspire believers to recognise the victory Christ’s resurrection brings into their lives and to live with faith and purpose.
Known for his unconventional outreach methods, which include preaching in nightclubs and engaging young audiences on social media, Padre Michael Watenga reiterated that Easter provides a timely opportunity to reach out to followers who may not regularly attend church.
He appealed to his fans to remain steadfast in their faith, celebrate responsibly, and reflect on the spiritual lessons that Easter conveys.
“I have come to bring this gospel to you because you are my beloved fans,” he said.
Key holiday
Easter in 2026 begins with Good Friday on April 3 and continues through Easter Monday on April 6, creating a long holiday weekend observed by millions of Christians around the world, including in Kenya.
Easter is one of the most significant celebrations in Christianity, commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ, which, according to Christian belief, occurred three days after his crucifixion.
This event is central to the Christian faith, as it represents victory over sin and death, as well as the promise of eternal life for believers.
The Easter period is marked by several important days, beginning with Good Friday, which solemnly observes the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his sacrifice for humanity.
This is followed by Holy Saturday, a day of reflection and waiting, leading up to Easter Sunday, when Christians joyfully celebrate Jesus’ resurrection. In many countries, including Kenya, Easter Monday is also observed as a public holiday, often used for family gatherings and communal festivities.
Easter is celebrated by Christians of many denominations, including Catholics, Protestants, and Orthodox believers, though specific customs and traditions may differ among communities.
The origins of the holiday trace back to early Christianity, based on the events recounted in the New Testament of the Bible. The date of Easter is determined according to the lunar calendar, which is why it varies each year, usually falling between late March and April.
