Manchester United could consider a dramatic change in the dugout if their disappointing start to the Premier League season continues, with former Napoli manager Antonio Conte reportedly emerging as a potential replacement for Michael Carrick.

According to Corriere della Sera, United are monitoring Conte as they assess their options amid growing concerns over the club’s early-season form.

The Red Devils have collected just four points from their opening four league matches, a return that has increased scrutiny on Carrick and placed his position under renewed attention.

Carrick took charge permanently after replacing Ruben Amorim in January and guided United back into the Champions League. However, the club’s difficult beginning to the 2026/27 campaign has reportedly prompted senior figures to consider whether another managerial change could be necessary.

Conte attracts United’s attention

Conte’s extensive record of winning major honours has reportedly made him an attractive option for the Manchester club.

The Italian is currently without a team after leaving Napoli in May, ending his contract with the Serie A side one year earlier than originally scheduled.

Despite his availability, bringing Conte to Old Trafford would not be straightforward.

Carrick only recently committed his future to United by signing a contract that runs until June 2028. Any decision to dismiss him so soon into that agreement would therefore represent a significant shift in the club’s plans.

Conte, meanwhile, is understood to be selective about his next assignment. The former Juventus, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Tottenham manager is reportedly prepared to return only for a project that meets his ambitions.

Juventus situation adds intrigue

Conte’s availability is also being discussed in connection with developments at Juventus, where Luciano Spalletti is facing pressure following a difficult opening to the domestic campaign.

Juventus have endured one of their poorest league starts in recent years, increasing scrutiny around Spalletti’s position. Although the coach remains under contract in Turin until June 2028 and has received public backing, some supporters have reportedly expressed interest in seeing Conte return to the club.

For now, Conte remains out of work, while Carrick continues in charge at Old Trafford.

United’s immediate focus will be on improving their results and performances, with the coming fixtures expected to provide an important test of whether Carrick can steady the team’s campaign.

Manchester United’s dramatic exit from the Carabao Cup at the hands of Brighton on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, further piled more pressure on Carrick.

Their next Premier League assignment is an away meeting with Fulham on September 20, before a demanding run of fixtures puts further attention on the manager and his squad.
