Digger trailer: Everything to know about Tom Cruise’s new movie

By , July 13, 2026

Warner Bros. has released the first official trailer for Digger, offering audiences a first look at Tom Cruise’s dramatic transformation in one of the most unconventional roles of his career.

The two-minute teaser, released on Monday, July 13, 2026, reintroduces Cruise as Digger Rockwell, a powerful and controversial figure caught at the centre of a global crisis.

Sporting heavy makeup that dramatically alters his appearance, the actor is almost unrecognisable, marking a sharp departure from his recent action-packed performances in the Mission: Impossible franchise.

Unexpected new role

In Digger, Cruise swaps his action-hero persona for a dark satirical comedy filled with political humour, social commentary and absurd situations.

The trailer introduces Rockwell as a man described as the most powerful man in the world, who appears to be scrambling to contain a catastrophe he may have helped create.

Rather than portraying a traditional hero, Cruise plays a chaotic and unpredictable leader trying to convince those around him that he alone can fix the crisis.

What the trailer reveals

Although Warner Bros. keeps many plot details under wraps, the trailer hints at a story centred on power, leadership, public perception and accountability.

Several scenes show Rockwell addressing crowds, navigating political chaos and reacting to an unfolding disaster while insisting he has everything under control.

As events spiral, the trailer suggests the character is struggling to maintain authority in an increasingly unstable world.

Rather than revealing the source of the global crisis, the teaser focuses on Rockwell’s behaviour and the consequences of his decisions, leaving audiences guessing about the full story.

One of the trailer’s most talked-about moments features a bizarre cat puppet, alongside several other surreal visual sequences that reinforce the film’s offbeat tone.

Star-studded cast

Alongside Cruise, the film features an impressive supporting cast including Riz Ahmed, Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Jesse Plemons, Michael Stuhlbarg, Sophie Wilde and Emma D’Arcy.

It also marks a rare comedic project for Academy Award-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, whose previous films, including Birdman, The Revenant and Babel, are best known for their emotional intensity and dramatic storytelling.

Warner Bros. has confirmed that Digger will open exclusively in cinemas on October 2, 2026.
