A Different World review: Deborah Wayne begins a new chapter at Hillman College

A Different World is a 2026 comedy-drama series set at the fictional Hillman College. The Netflix sequel follows Deborah Wayne, a young student starting her first year at the same historically Black college attended by her parents, Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert.
The 10-episode series focuses on college life, friendship, romance, family expectations, and the pressure of trying to find your own identity. Although it continues the story of the original A Different World, viewers can follow the new characters without having watched the older series.
Deborah arrives at Hillman
Deborah enters Hillman carrying a family name that already means a lot on campus.
Her parents, Dwayne and Whitley, were students at Hillman before building their lives outside college. Now their youngest daughter has arrived at the same school, but Deborah does not want to spend her university years simply being known as their daughter.
She is creative, free-spirited, and still trying to work out what she wants from life. After being rejected from her preferred school, Deborah chooses Hillman and sees college as a chance to explore different interests, including art, music, and theatre.
Her biggest challenge is learning how to make decisions for herself while dealing with parents who are still very interested in guiding her.
A new group of friends
Deborah’s college experience becomes easier after she meets Rashida Duvall and Hazel Henry. Rashida is practical and becomes one of Deborah’s closest friends. Hazel arrives at Hillman with strong ideas about what she wants from college and her future, including finding a husband who shares her beliefs.
The three young women are different, but their friendship becomes an important part of the series. They attend parties, deal with relationships, and experience the ordinary confusion that comes with being a first-year student.
Amir has his own struggles
Another student at the centre of the story is Amir Rodale.
Amir is a psychology student from Harlem who arrives at Hillman expecting the usual college experience. Instead, he discovers that there is a shortage of accommodation and ends up sleeping on a community couch.
His situation is made more complicated by his past. Amir has previously spent time in juvenile detention, but he is determined to build a different future for himself. He is confident when advising other people but often struggles to follow the same advice in his own life.
Shaquille and Kojo
Shaquille Johnson is another important member of the new student group.
He is connected to Hillman’s football programme and has a close relationship with his father, Ron Johnson. Shaquille is trying to balance his sporting ambitions with the changes that come with becoming an adult.
Meanwhile, Kojo becomes part of the friendship group and the wider social life on campus. Their stories give the series more than one view of college life, showing how students can have very different experiences even when they attend the same school.
Family problems reach Hillman
The series also gives the older characters their own storylines.
Dwayne Wayne has returned to Hillman in an administrative role and is trying to help the college deal with serious financial problems. A funding scandal threatens the institution, putting pressure on him to protect the school while also looking after his daughter.
Whitley Gilbert, meanwhile, has built a successful career and now has to adjust to seeing her children become more independent. A Different World works as both a continuation and a fresh start.
