September is typically a quieter month at the box office, but this year brings plenty of star power, sequels, action and horror.

From the return of a beloved witchy classic to a highly anticipated video-game reboot, several major titles are set to hit cinemas throughout the month.

Here are five of the biggest movies to watch out for in September 2026.

1. Onslaught

Adam Wingard returns to action-horror with the film, starring Adria Arjona as an Army sniper living in a trailer park who is forced to protect her daughter after genetically engineered super soldiers escape from a secret facility.

The film, which is set to be released on September 4, 2026, also features Dan Stevens, Rebecca Hall, Michael Biehn and UFC fighter Alex Pereira.

A24 is giving the movie a wide theatrical release, while Wingard has described it as existing in the same world as The Guest.

With its action-heavy premise, horror elements and expected violent set pieces, Onslaught is set to give audiences an early September scare.

2. Practical Magic 2

Nearly three decades after the original, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman return as sisters Sally and Gillian Owens in Practical Magic 2, which arrives in cinemas on September 11, 2026.

Directed by Susanne Bier, the sequel takes place years after the events of the first film. Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest are also expected to return as the Owens sisters’ aunts, while Joey King and Maisie Williams join the story as Sally’s grown daughters.

The sequel once again brings the Owens family face-to-face with their long-running curse, making it one of September’s biggest nostalgic releases.

3. The Uprising

Director Paul Greengrass turns his attention to English history with The Uprising, a historical action drama inspired by the 1381 Peasants’ Revolt. The film is scheduled for release on September 11, 2026.

Andrew Garfield leads the cast as an ordinary man caught up in the rebellion against King Richard II. Jamie Bell, Cosmo Jarvis, Thomasin McKenzie and Katherine Waterston also star.

The film explores the uprising that helped shape the legends surrounding Robin Hood and promises a gritty take on one of England’s most significant popular rebellions.

4. Resident Evil

Horror fans are getting another trip to Raccoon City with a new Resident Evil reboot, directed by Zach Cregger, known for Barbarian and Weapons. The film is scheduled to arrive on September 18, 2026.

Austin Abrams stars as a medical courier who finds himself caught in the middle of an outbreak in Raccoon City. Paul Walter Hauser, Kali Reis and Zach Cherry also feature in the cast.

The new film takes a fresh approach to the video-game franchise rather than continuing the previous movie series.

It is expected to lean heavily into survival horror, giving fans a new interpretation of the world made famous by the games.

5. Heart of the Beast

Heart of the Beast arrives in cinemas on September 25, 2026, bringing Brad Pitt back together with director David Ayer for an action thriller.

The film follows a Special Forces officer stranded in the Alaskan wilderness with his combat dog after a plane crash.

The film also stars J.K. Simmons and Anna Lambe and combines survival drama with an emotional story about the bond between a soldier and his dog.

With Pitt and Ayer previously working together on Fury, the film is one of the month’s biggest star-driven releases.
