Mercy Masika: Inside the rise of a voice that defined Kenya gospel music

By , April 26, 2026

Mercy Masika is one of Kenya’s most respected gospel worship ministers, known for her powerful voice, strong lyrical depth, and ability to lead heartfelt worship across generations.

Her journey in music began at a young age in church, where she was raised in a deeply musical and gospel-rooted family.

She first appeared on children’s gospel programmes such as Sing and Shine and Joy Bringers, and gradually grew into ministry through consistent church performances and early recordings.

For several years, she quietly built her foundation in music while still in school and church circles, developing a sound shaped by faith, culture, and scripture before stepping fully into the public spotlight.

Breakthrough project Wendo Waku

Her breakthrough came during her university years with the Swahili and Kamba gospel project Wendo Waku (Your Love), which introduced her to a wider audience across Kenya.

The project’s standout hit Amukomete gained massive reception in churches and local gospel platforms, marking a major turning point in her career.

However, her defining moment came in 2015 with the release of the worship anthem Mwema. The song quickly became a national hit in Kenya’s gospel scene, spreading across churches, crusades, and households, and becoming one of the most recognisable worship songs of its time.

The message of gratitude and God’s goodness resonated deeply with listeners, turning the track into a long-lasting anthem that still features in worship sessions across the region.

Music and collaborations

Before and after Mwema, she released several impactful songs, including Nikupendeze, Shule Yako (Nifunze), Huyu Yesu, and later Umeniweza, building a catalogue rooted in worship and devotion.

Her music style blends contemporary gospel with African rhythms, creating emotionally rich worship experiences that work both in church services and large gospel gatherings.

Over the years, she has collaborated with regional gospel ministers, including Christina Shusho, with songs such as Divai and Rebecca, expanding her reach beyond Kenya into East Africa’s worship scene.

Away from music, she serves in ministry as a worship leader at Jubilee Christian Church (JCC), where she continues to mentor and lead worship teams.

Her journey has earned multiple awards, including Groove Awards recognition, cementing her place among Kenya’s most influential gospel voices.
