Majembe vs Mbavu: How Obinna is reshaping Kenyan entertainment industry

By , April 5, 2026

The Kenyan entertainment scene witnessed an electrifying fusion of sport and showmanship during the just-concluded boxing event dubbed Vurugu Night Fight, thanks to visionary media personality Steve Thompson Maghana, widely known as Oga Obinna

The bout was held at Kasarani Indoor Arena, Nairobi, on Saturday night, April 4, 2026, featuring Portifas Odipo, alias Majembe, Mbavu Destroyer, widely known as Ferdinand Omondi, and other boxers.

In a bold move, Obinna seamlessly incorporated boxing into a high-energy entertainment experience, proving that the country’s nightlife and sports sectors can intersect in innovative ways.

The event was not just about fists flying in the ring. Kenyan music sensations, including Khaligraph Jones, took to the stage during the vurugu bout, the rowdy, adrenaline-filled moments of the bout, keeping the crowd hyped and engaged.

The combination of live boxing and live music created an immersive atmosphere that few had seen before in Kenya.

Adding another layer of excitement, DJ Afro, real name James Mwangi, took on the challenge of providing live commentary for the fight.

Remarkably, this was his first time calling a live boxing event, but his energetic narration and crowd engagement made him an instant fan favourite. From breaking down punches to hyping up the audience between rounds, DJ Afro proved that his skills extend far beyond the turntables.

Obinna’s vision

It is worth noting that Obinna’s vision is clear, he is redefining what it means to attend an entertainment event in Kenya.

Additionally, by merging athletic competition with live performances, he is creating a template that could transform how fans experience both music and sport.

With the success of Vurugu Night Fight, the entertainment and sports industries in Kenya are witnessing the rise of a new, hybrid model that promises more adrenaline, music, and unforgettable nights.

Obinna’s Flowers

Obinna deserves flowers for turning Vurugu into a platform that showcased unseen talent and elevated a once-overlooked sport into the national spotlight, so much so that even the President joined the conversation.

Big win for boxers

Following the successful Vurugu Night Fight, William Ruto has pledged to sustain boxing moments.

In his congratulatory message for the event’s main acts, Majembe and Mbavu Destroyer, sent on Sunday, April 5, 2026, Ruto, who contributed a total of Ksh4 million to stage the event, praised both fighters for their resilience, describing the match as too close to call and applauding the spirited performance that kept fans on edge.

”Congratulations, Majembe (Portifas Odipo), on your victory against Mbavu Destroyer (Ferdinand Omondi) in yesterday’s Vurugu Championship. Both of you put up a spirited fight, delivering an entertaining match that kept us on edge, too close to call,” Ruto wrote.

”This match has reignited the passion for boxing across the country, restoring fan belief and excitement in the sport. We commit to sustaining this momentum by supporting the sport, investing in talent, and creating opportunities to grow boxing across the country.”
