Lydia Wanjiru: Why I stopped comparing myself with others and how you can too

Content creator Lydia Wanjiru has opened up about why she stopped comparing herself with others, sharing advice on how people can focus on their own journeys and find happiness in their own lives.
In an Instagram post on Monday, March 2, 2026, she reflected on her life experiences, including growing up without parents, living in a one-bedroom house, and navigating life without financial support or connections.
Lydia said that understanding your own path and celebrating your progress is more important than measuring yourself against others.
“If I started comparing myself with others, I wouldn’t even notice the small joys in life like the happiness I felt after getting married,” she said. “Everyone lives their own race, and your life experiences, challenges, and the opportunities you’ve had are different from mine. Comparing yourself to others will only take away your peace and your focus. It won’t help you grow.”
She encouraged her followers to reflect on their own achievements, no matter how small. “Ask yourself what opportunities you have that others don’t have. Think about the challenges you have overcome and the progress you’ve made. Focusing on your journey will give you confidence and a sense of fulfilment that no comparison can provide,” she said.

Lydia also addressed social media, warning against the trap of measuring yourself by what you see online. “People share the highlights of their lives, not the struggles. Don’t let that make you feel like your life is less than anyone else’s. Your path is unique, and what you achieve matters more than what anyone else has.”
“Instead of looking at what others have, focus on your own journey and celebrate your small victories. Your growth is yours alone, and it is valuable. Life is not a competition. The sooner you focus on your own path, the sooner you will find contentment and peace,” she added.
She further urged people to be patient with themselves, saying it is okay to move at their own pace. She emphasised that everyone’s journey is different and encouraged people to embrace where they are while continuing to move forward.
According to Lydia, focusing on your own path and progress is the key to building true happiness and fulfilment.
