Eko Dydda: How a Mathare upbringing and faith encounter built a gospel rap pioneer in Kenya

Eko Dydda has carved out a distinct place in Kenya’s music industry as one of the early voices of gospel hip-hop.
Raised in Mathare, Nairobi’s Eastlands, his early life was shaped by hardship, street pressure and survival instincts. Despite that environment, a strict Christian upbringing at home grounded him in faith and discipline.
He attended Riverside Academy in Kariobangi before joining Eastleigh High School, where music slowly became more than just expression; it became direction. Hip-hop gave him a voice to tell stories drawn from his surroundings and personal struggles.
Faith turning point
A defining turning point came after a personal faith encounter that redirected his path. From that moment, his focus shifted from street influence to purpose-driven music rooted in gospel messaging and transformation.
His breakthrough arrived in 2007 through the track “Niko na Reason,” a collaboration with Holy Dave.
The song introduced him to mainstream audiences and marked the rise of his unique “stagger” rap style, a fast-paced delivery blended with intentional rhythmic pauses that became his signature sound.
He is also known for his distinctive rap flow, mixing Sheng wordplay with gospel messaging, giving his music a raw urban identity that connects deeply with young audiences in Nairobi’s streets.
He followed this with a series of impactful songs including “Apana Tambua Ukabila,” “Top to Di Top,” and “Ako na Form,” all carrying strong messages of unity, discipline and hope. His music consistently speaks to urban youth navigating real-life challenges.
Music legacy today
In 2009, after Kenya’s post-election violence, he officially changed his name to Eko Dydda, inspired by “Echo Jesus.” The move symbolised his stand against tribal divisions and his push for national unity through faith.
Beyond music, he has worked as a poet, choreographer, cartoonist and web designer. He also runs a label, NBA (Now Born Again), where he mentors upcoming artists and promotes faith-driven creativity.
Eko Dydda has shown no signs of slowing down in 2026, with the launch of his album Pastor Kwa Hoodie marking a key moment in his continued activity in Kenya’s gospel music scene.
He has also shaped his family’s creative path, raising his sons Wisdom “AmBlessed” Dydda and Favour “KeepItReal” Dydda under strong values of faith, identity and purpose.
Gospel musician Eko Dydda celebrated his birthday in grand style with a star-studded concert on Saturday, January 31, 2026, that also doubled as the launch of his new album, Pastor Kwa Hoodie.
