Charisma urges Kenyans to prioritise voter registration before anything else

Kenyan musician Fidel Shammah, popularly known as Charisma, has called on Kenyans to make voter registration their top priority ahead of the upcoming elections.

He said on Instagram on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, that this question should come first in any conversation, whether at a club, a university, or a community gathering. He emphasised that this is a pivotal moment for the country, and citizens must act responsibly.

He said, “Are you registered?? This should be the first question you ask anyone. A talking stage, at the club, at the universities, at events, at chamas. Any meet up! This is a pivotal moment for us as Kenyans.”

He explained that many young people have been discouraged from registering due to negative talk about the political system. He said defeatist attitudes should be ignored, as they prevent citizens from exercising their rights. He added that focusing on participation is more important than listening to those who spread doubt.

“For months, I’ve said on podcasts, and anyone who cares to listen, don’t listen to defeatist people! Oh, why would we get voters’ cards na ataiba? Oh, si mnajua, you can’t really remove him?”

He urged Kenyans to take practical steps and secure their voter cards as soon as possible. He said this is the simplest way to ensure that every citizen’s voice is counted in the elections. She added that registration is a civic duty that should not be delayed.

Why voter registration matters

Charisma said voter registration is more than a formality; it is the foundation of democracy. She explained that citizens who fail to register risk losing their opportunity to influence the country’s future. She added that conversations about elections should start with checking registration status.

Charisma’s call for Kenyans to prioritise voter registration comes amid the growing Niko Kadi movement. The campaign has focused on encouraging Gen Z and other young citizens to register and participate in upcoming elections.

By raising awareness at universities, clubs, and community gatherings, the initiative has made voter registration a visible national conversation. Charisma’s message aligns with the movement’s goals, urging every Kenyan to get their voter’s card and exercise their civic duty.

The current drive being pushed by journalist Allans Ademba and spoken word artist Willie Oeba comes months after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) decried the low voter registration turnout.

Nonetheless, celebrities such as Adelle Onyango have come out to boldly support the latest drive, insisting that it offers Gen Z a chance to be part of the electoral process.
