The fire broke out shortly after midnight on Thursday, May 28, 2026, in one of the school’s dormitories, quickly spreading through the building as students slept. Emergency responders, including police, Kenya Red Cross teams, and county disaster officials, rushed to the scene in a desperate attempt to contain the blaze and rescue trapped students.

Authorities have confirmed at least 16 fatalities and approximately 79 injuries, with several of the injured rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical care. Some victims remain in serious condition as medical teams continue to monitor and treat them.

The tragedy has reignited national concern over safety standards in boarding schools, especially regarding fire preparedness, emergency exits, and response systems. Survivors and responders described a chaotic scene as students tried to escape the flames in the darkness of the night.
