Sonko advises Mosiria to challenge his boss Sakaja for Nairobi governor seat

Nairobi County Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria has revealed a conversation with former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko in which he sought advice on which elective seat he could contest in the 2027 General Election, with Sonko advising him to go for the Nairobi governor’s seat.

In an X video posted on Saturday, September 26, 2026, Mosiria, who currently serves in Governor Johnson Sakaja’s administration, shared his conversation with Sonko, asking which elective position he could pursue with less pressure and a better chance of securing.

The suggestion could set up an interesting political contest in Nairobi if Mosiria eventually decides to run, as he would be challenging Sakaja, the governor under whom he currently serves.

Mosiria asks Sonko which seat to contest

During the conversation, Mosiria told Sonko that members of the Kisii community had been encouraging him to contest for Nairobi governor.

He then asked Sonko, who previously served as Nairobi governor, which seat he could contest and enter early without facing too much pressure.

“Ni kiti gani ile nikisimama naweza kuingia nayo mapema yenye haina pressure mingi? Unajua wewe ndio unaelewa Nairobi,” Mosiria asked.

Sonko responded by pointing him towards the governor’s seat.

“Governor,” Sonko said.

Mosiria then asked whether Sonko would give him a party ticket if he decided to contest for governor.

“So nikija kwa hii chama unanipatia tikiti ya governor? Pata tikiti ya governor Nairobi,” Mosiria asked.

The exchange did not amount to a formal declaration of candidature by Mosiria, but showed him openly discussing a possible gubernatorial bid.

Sonko’s advice

Sonko, who served as Nairobi governor before being removed from office through impeachment in 2020, has remained active in Nairobi political affairs.

In the conversation, Mosiria also spoke about his relationship with Sonko and recalled working during Sonko’s time as governor.

He said he had received support from Sonko during a difficult period in his career and described the former governor as someone who had played a role in his journey.

Mosiria also told Sonko that he would seek his blessings if he eventually decided to pursue the governor’s seat.

Mosiria eyes Matiang’i

Mosiria also brought Jubilee Party leader-in-waiting Fred Matiang’i into the conversation, saying he would seek him out as he considers his political options.

He indicated that he would speak to Matiang’i because, in his view, the former Cabinet secretary does not currently have a candidate for the Nairobi governor’s position.

Mosiria said he would first seek Sonko’s advice and blessing before going to Matiang’i to discuss the possibility.

Mosiria and Sakaja

Mosiria is currently a Nairobi County chief officer and has served in several dockets within the county administration.

Governor Sakaja reassigned him from the Environment docket to Citizen Engagement and Customer Service in November 2025.
