Shatta Bway reveals wife Becky’s last words and illness she battled before death
By Valerian Khakayi, September 2, 2026Radio presenter Steve Jacob Maunda, popularly known as Shatta Bway, has opened up about the illness his wife, Rebecca alias Becky, battled before her death, recalling her final words to him and the difficult journey that saw her repeatedly admitted to hospital.
Speaking about the beginning of her illness, during a candid conversation with media personality Robetta Bobbie, Shatta Bway said Becky would initially fall ill occasionally before her condition gradually worsened and her hospital visits became more frequent.
According to the radio presenter, his late wife was battling with liver complications that had seen her health deteriorate over time.
“Becky, alianza kuwa mgonjwa, tunaenda hospitali tunarudi tunakaa inasaulika tena tunaenda, then it got to a point ikaanza kuwa frequent, maybe angeenda hospitali after like six months sasa ikakuwa monthly anaenda ana two weeks hospitali anarudi nyumbani tena anakuwa mgonjwa alikuwa na shida ya liver,”Shatta disclosed.
Shatta Bway went on to say that the family remained hopeful that Becky would recover, especially because she would show signs of improvement after receiving treatment, only for her condition to relapse.
“Tulikuwa fikiria atakuwa better alikuwa anatibia anaimprove tena inarelapse, ni liver tu ndio ilikuwa inamlemea, but after options zote kama kuna transplant, ooh ni ngumu there was alot of trying,” he added.
He further stated that said Becky continued to move between hospital and home as the family explored different options to manage her liver condition
“Alikuwa anaenda hospitali anarudi nyumbani tena anaenda until mara ya mwisho akaenda hospitali, and that was it,” he said.
Becky’s final words
He recalled visiting her on a Thursday when doctors were discussing discharging her from hospital. During their conversation, Becky appeared tired and eventually asked him to go home and look after their children.
“The doctors were talking of discharging her; that Thursday we spoke. When I went to hospital to see her she looked very tired tukaongea ongea, the last word she told me was, wacha mimi ni rest wewe enda ukachunge watoto watoto wakitoka shule wakupate kwa nyumba that was Thursday,” Shatta recalled.
Shatta Bway said he tried calling Becky later that evening, but she did not answer.
“Hiyo jioni nampigia simu hashiki, Friday asubuhi nienda kumwona nkaona hayuko sawa yuko but vile ningeexpect nilimwacha hospitali nikaenda kupiga show,” he added.
By Saturday, her condition had worsened, prompting doctors to move her from the ward to the High Dependency Unit (HDU), despite earlier discussions about discharging her.
“Saturday alizidiwa alikuwa kwa ward akapelekwa HDU na alikuwa akuwe discharged two days ago,” Shatta stated.
Becky’s death
Becky died on June 25, 2023, leaving behind her family and loved ones. In his account, Shatta Bway described the difficult health battle that preceded her death and the final conversation they shared before her condition took a turn for the worse.
