Read the room: Dr Ofweneke tells Karen Nyamu after she was booed at Natalie Githinji’s event
By Valerian Khakayi, September 28, 2026Media personality Dr Ofweneke has weighed in on the reception nominated Senator Karen Nyamu received after taking the stage at Natalie Githinji’s Endometriosis Warriors event at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).
Sections of the crowd interrupted Nyamu’s speech with “Wantam” chants as she addressed attendees at the event on Sunday, September 27, 2026.
Reacting to the incident, Dr Ofweneke questioned why politicians attend events where emotions are already running high, arguing that leaders should be sensitive to the mood of the room.
“Why do politicians go to events where emotions are involved? Why don’t you just read the room? Karen Nyamu, you did have to go,” Dr Ofweneke said on Monday, September 28,2026.
“The room is too intense right now; avoid this gathering, especially if they are not politically motivated; people will not listen to you. There are places you become a politician, and there are places you just have to use wisdom.”
Questions for legislators
Dr Ofweneke also turned his attention to lawmakers and questioned the pace at which they have addressed endometriosis through legislation.
“Legislatures, where have you been? We lost Njamby Koikai; now our girl is battling this thing. Where have you guys been in pushing bills? You guys wait until there is a public uproar to rush with bills to the parliament.”
He further questioned whether leaders should wait for public pressure before taking action on issues affecting Kenyans.
“Where is the passion to lead and fight for the people without the public making noise?”
The TV host further questioned the values guiding leadership.
“Unless our leaders are guided by God, they will not lead well because who or where is their source of wisdom and values in terms of leadership? If their motivating factor is not God, then who is it?” he questioned.
Endometriosis event
The incident came amid a disagreement over Nyamu’s presence at the event.
Eric Omondi said organisers had agreed that politicians would not attend because they did not want the event’s focus on endometriosis and Githinji’s advocacy work to be diverted.
“We had given orders kwa gate, no politicians because they would divert conversation, and it was about endometriosis and Natalie,” Omondi said.
He said the decision was also influenced by what he described as a lack of financial support from politicians towards Githinji’s treatment and the event.
“The brief was very simple: no politicians allowed because of two reasons,” Omondi said.
“Reason number one, hakuna politician hatuupigia simu hata sai Natalie ako na deni hajamaliza kulipa KICC na sound; there is no single women rep ama aspirant at least in Nairobi hatukupigia. None of them supported Natalie.”
Omondi added that the second reason was to keep the event centred on endometriosis.
“Reason number two, we did not want you to come and divert our message and attention from endometriosis,” he said.
He also questioned why Nyamu did not allow Githinji to have the spotlight during the event.
“Ata wewe ulijua ni nini itafanyika, kwa nini haungepatia Natalie moment yake?” Omondi asked.
