Outer Banks Season 5 review: The Pogues face their final treasure hunt

Outer Banks is a teen drama series that combines adventure, mystery, romance, and crime. Set on an island divided between wealthy residents known as the Kooks and working-class locals called the Pogues, the series follows John B and his close group of friends as they become involved in dangerous treasure hunts.
The story begins when John B discovers clues connected to the disappearance of his father. What starts as a search for answers soon turns into a hunt for a legendary treasure. Along the way, John B, Sarah, JJ, Kiara, Pope and Cleo face criminals, family problems, betrayal and the constant struggle between the Kooks and Pogues.
The series has always placed friendship at the centre of its story. The treasure is important, but the bond between the group is what keeps bringing them back together.
A short backstory of the series
In the first season, John B brings his friends together to search for the treasure linked to his missing father. The hunt takes them through hidden clues, old maps and dangerous encounters while John B’s relationship with Sarah brings the Pogues closer to the wealthy Cameron family.
The following seasons expand the treasure hunt beyond the Outer Banks. The group searches for gold, becomes involved in international adventures and repeatedly finds itself in trouble while trying to stay together.
By Season 4, the Pogues have already survived several losses and major discoveries. Their latest search centres on the Blue Crown, another legendary treasure. However, the season ends on a painful note when JJ is killed while trying to protect Kiara from his biological father, Chandler Groff. The loss leaves John B, Sarah, Kiara, Pope and Cleo facing their biggest challenge yet.
Season 5 starts with the Pogues broken
Season 5 picks up after JJ’s death, giving the final chapter a more serious starting point. The Pogues are grieving and are also left without the Blue Crown. They are far from home, while Chandler Groff remains a threat. Dalia and the Corsairs are also closing in on them.
For John B, Sarah, Kiara, Pope, and Cleo, the final adventure is no longer simply about finding another treasure. They now have to deal with the loss of their friend while trying to secure a future for themselves.
One of the most interesting parts of the final season is the unlikely relationship between the Pogues and Rafe. Rafe has spent much of the series on the opposite side of the group, but Season 4 showed him beginning to move closer to Sarah and the Pogues. Season 5 is expected to test whether that uneasy alliance can last when their lives are once again at risk.
A final chapter built around friendship
The strongest part of Outer Banks has never been the treasure alone. It is the way the characters keep choosing each other when everything around them falls apart. Season 5 appears to understand that. The search for freedom, revenge for JJ, and the attempt to rebuild their lives give the final season a clear purpose.
