Nilikuwa plumber: Dem wa Facebook opens up on why she ditched plumbing career

Kenyan comedian and content creator Millicent Ayuwa, popularly known as Dem Wa Facebook, has opened up about the different career paths she explored before finding fame through comedy and digital content creation.
Speaking during an interview with media personality Tony Mwirigi, Dem Wa Facebook revealed that she initially pursued plumbing after completing school but was forced to abandon the career because of financial challenges.
“Nilikuwa plumber, nilikuwa nasomea plumbing lakini sikumaliza ilinilema, school fees lakini nilikuwa nimeenda hiyo direction,” she said.
According to the comedian, lack of school fees disrupted her plans to complete her plumbing training, leaving her to explore other opportunities as she sought to become financially independent.
Her journey also included professional football, with Dem Wa Facebook revealing that she played in the Kenyan Women’s Premier League before eventually venturing into comedy and influencing.
Football career
Dem Wa Facebook said she was a professional footballer and played for the Trans Nzoia Falcons in the Kenyan Women’s Premier League.
“Mimi ni professional footballer,nilikuwa na cheza women premier league nilikuwa Trans Nzoia Falcons, lakini Kenya mpira ya wasichana hailipi ya wanaume inalipa, alafu Kenya pia imefocus sana kwa wanaume kushinda wasichana,” she said.
She explained that the financial challenges facing women’s football made it difficult for her to rely on the sport as a career, despite her passion and experience.
“Leo team ya wanaume ikicheza uwanja itajaa na wasichana hakuna watu wataenda kuwaona alafu pia support mingi inaenda kwa wanaume ata ukiangalizia hizi betting companies zimefocus na team za wanaume ni ngumu sana kupea wasichana ufadhili,” Dem Wa Facebook said.
The comedian added that the lack of financial support became particularly difficult after school, when she needed to establish herself financially.
“So kulikuwa na challenges hakuna pesa, hiyo wakati umemaliza shule na unafaa kujitengemea,” she said.
Her experience in football has previously been documented, with Dem Wa Facebook recalling how she joined Trans Nzoia Falcons after completing high school. She has also spoken about the poor financial rewards for female players compared with their male counterparts.
After moving away from football and her earlier career plans, Dem Wa Facebook eventually found her footing in comedy and digital content creation, where she built a large following through her humorous videos and social media presence.
Her career journey has since seen her transition from aspiring plumber and professional footballer to one of Kenya’s recognisable digital personalities.
