Nilikuwa partyless: Influencer Mercy Masai speaks after joining Gachagua’s DCP Party
By Paulette Mboga, August 17, 2026Influencer Mercy Masai has explained that she was not previously a member of any political party before joining former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP).
Masai said she had been working independently and seeking votes under her own name.
The social media influencer made the clarification after formally joining DCP Party as she prepares to contest the Kajiado Woman Representative seat in the 2027 General Election. She said her association with people from different political parties did not mean she belonged to any of those parties.
“It is very important I make this clear. Chama yangu ni DCP na sijawai kuwa chama ingine. I have been partyless, nilikua freelancer,” Mercy Masai said on Monday, August 17, 2026.

She explained that she had been asking people to vote for her as Mercy Masai rather than presenting herself as a member of a particular political party. Masai also said her interactions with politicians from different parties had led to people making assumptions about her political affiliation.
Masai explains her political position
Masai said she had never told people that she belonged to another party before joining DCP. She explained that she had remained independent while working towards her political ambitions and engaging with people across different political groups.
“Nimekua nikiomba kura kama Mercy Masai. So you guys have been seeing me with watu wa different chama, but mimi hakuna mahali nimewai kuja nikawaambia niko chama yoyote,” Mercy Masai said.
The social media influencer also addressed her past meeting with Kalonzo Musyoka, detailing that they had not engaged more about her political future.
Her move to DCP was welcomed by Gachagua, who said Masai had decided to join the party as she prepares her bid for the Kajiado Woman Representative position. He described her decision as one based on listening to the people of Kajiado.

“Welcome to DCP Party, Mercy Nashipai Legilisho (Mercy Masai) as you plan your bid for the position of Woman Representative for Kajiado County,” Rigathi Gachagua said.
Gachagua also said Masai had made the right choice by joining DCP and linked the party to the aspirations of Kenyans. He expressed support for her political plans as she seeks to represent Kajiado residents in the next election.
“The future is Green!” Rigathi Gachagua said.
Masai’s entry into DCP comes as Gachagua works to expand the party ahead of the 2027 elections. The party has attracted several other political figures.
