Mosiria shares amazing transformation of a mother he rescued from Nairobi streets

Mercy Karimi, a mother of four from Meru, is undergoing rehabilitation after spending years living on the streets of Nairobi.
In a statement on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, Nairobi County Chief Officer for Citizen Engagement and Customer Service Geoffrey Mosiria said Karimi was rescued from the streets about two months ago in an intervention led by activist Geoffrey Mosiria, who has continued to follow her progress.
Mosiria said Karimi had been living on the streets for about four years after losing the support and care she depended on during the COVID-19 period.
He said he recently visited Karimi at Rapid Rehabilitation Centre for Addiction, where she is receiving treatment and support as she works towards rebuilding her life.
The visit marked another stage in Karimi’s journey away from street life, with her current focus being recovery and regaining stability.
Mosiria said the process of helping vulnerable people is often challenging, particularly because those involved in rescue efforts can face criticism over their decision to document their interventions on social media.
Mosiria defends street rescue efforts
He has previously faced accusations of seeking publicity from his street-rescue activities. However, in his latest update, he defended the practice, saying the attention should instead be directed towards the people who need assistance.
He said Karimi’s case was an example of why vulnerable people should not be judged solely by the circumstances in which they are found.
The activist is now appealing to members of the public who may have information about Karimi’s relatives to help facilitate her reunification with her family.
Karimi’s family background and the circumstances that led to her spending years on the streets remain an important part of her recovery and eventual reintegration.
Mosiria calls for support from citizens
Mosiria has also appealed for material support for Karimi as she continues with her rehabilitation. Members of the public willing to assist have been encouraged to provide items such as clothes, food and other necessities.
He further urged Kenyans who encounter people struggling with addiction or homelessness to consider seeking appropriate assistance for them rather than simply leaving them on the streets.
Karimi’s case highlights the difficulties faced by people who become homeless and the challenges involved in helping them transition back into stable family and community life.
For now, she remains at the rehabilitation centre as she works towards recovery, with efforts also underway to establish contact with her family and provide the support needed for her next stage of life.
