Jalang’o: Raila Odinga would have been very proud of me

Lang’ata MP and Nairobi senatorial hopeful Phelix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o, has said the late Prime Minister Raila Odinga would have been very proud of the progress made in the constituency since he left office as its MP.
Jalang’o was responding to a question on whether Raila would have been proud of what he is doing in Lang’ata.
“Very, very proud. Where he left Lang’ata, it is not where it is now. We have done very well,” Jalang’o said in an interview on Thursday, September 24, 2026.
He recalled an occasion when President William Ruto called him during a public baraza in Kibra and told him he wanted to meet him in Lang’ata. Jalang’o said the meeting involved the opening of the first affordable housing project, after which he contacted Raila to seek his view.
“Tukiwa katika public baraza ya Kibra, Rais akanipigia akaniambia nataka kukuona, nakuja Lang’ata, tunafungua the first affordable housing, mimi mwenyewe nikapigia Raila, nikamwambia rais ameniita, what is your take?” Jalang’o said.
Seeking Raila’s view
Jalang’o said Raila told him to go ahead after he informed him about the invitation. He explained that some people did not understand the decision at the time and viewed it as a mistake, but he said he had spoken to his party leader before making the move.
“Akasema enda. People didn’t understand. Ikakua ni mistake. I had direct permission from my party leader,” Jalang’o said.
The MP also spoke about his political decisions, saying he does not consider any of the moves he has made to be mistakes. He explained that every political move he has taken was made after careful thought.
“I have never made any mistake politically. Every move I have ever made has been calculated,” Jalang’o said.
His remarks came as he reflected on his current political position and the relationship he had with the late Raila. He said the changes in Lang’ata were part of what made him believe Raila would be proud of the work done since he left the constituency.
Jalang’o was also asked about claims that he is a government project. He rejected the description and said people have their own visions, dismissing the suggestion that he was working as a project for anyone.
“Sio project, unasema mimi ni project? Project ya nani? Hakuna. Kila mtu ako na maono,” Jalang’o said.
He maintained that his political decisions have been calculated and linked his current position to the choices he has made along the way. Jalang’o also pointed to his consultation with Raila before attending the meeting with the President as an example of how he handled such decisions.
