Doctor Victoria Nthunya Mutiso devoted her career to advancing mental healthcare in Kenya.

A respected clinical psychologist, researcher and mental health advocate, she spent more than two decades championing evidence-based treatment, influencing public health policy and mentoring young professionals in the field.

Widely recognised for her expertise in public mental health and implementation science, Dr Mutiso became one of Kenya’s leading voices in mental health research. Through her work, she sought to bridge the gap between scientific research and real-world healthcare, ensuring that effective mental health interventions reached the people who needed them most.

Her remarkable career was cut short following her death in Nairobi on Wednesday, July 29, 2026. Even so, the impact of her work continues to be felt in Kenya and beyond, where colleagues, researchers and healthcare professionals remember her for her dedication to improving lives through science and compassionate care.

Academic journey

Dr Mutiso pursued an academic path that reflected her passion for psychology and mental healthcare.

She trained as a clinical psychologist before advancing into research, where she specialised in implementation science, the study of how proven health interventions can be effectively integrated into healthcare systems.

Her academic achievements earned her recognition both locally and internationally.

A career in mental healthcare

Dr Mutiso built an impressive reputation as a clinical psychologist and researcher whose work focused on strengthening mental health systems across Africa.

She served as the Research Director at the Africa Institute of Mental and Brain Health (AFRIMEB), where she led research aimed at improving access to quality mental healthcare, particularly in underserved communities.
