Austin Muigai opens up about 6-month depression after painful heartbreak
By Paulette Mboga, August 25, 2026Comedian Austin Muigai has opened up about a painful heartbreak that left him depressed for about six months.
He said the experience was difficult because he continued seeing the person he had broken up with every day since they were in the same class. Austin explained that the heartbreak affected him deeply and at one point left him crying alone.
“Kuna nilikua nalia pekee yangu, nilikua depressed for like 6 months,” Austin Muigai said while on an interview with Oga Obinna on Monday, August 24, 2026.
Austin said there came a point when he decided he could not continue feeling bad about the situation. He explained that he eventually stopped getting angry and stopped allowing himself to remain stuck in the pain. He said he then looked for other ways to make himself happy and move forward.

“So ikafika point nikawacha kujam. Nikawacha kuskia vibaya juu sasa nitaskia vibaya for how long? Ikabidi nimetafuta other avenues za kujifurahisha,” Austin said.
Dealing with heartbreak
Austin explained that heartbreak can be harder when someone starts feeling like they own the person they were in a relationship with. He said letting go of that idea can help someone move on faster. He also warned people against going fully into a relationship without being careful about the emotional risk.
“What I can tell people is not to test the depth of the river with both feet. Ni mbaya sana especially ni mtu hamkuzaliwa hamkuzaliwa na yeye,” Austin Muigai said.
Austin said he believes people need to remove the idea that they own another human being in a relationship. He explained that doing so can make it easier to accept that a relationship has ended. He said this mindset can help a person move forward after heartbreak.

“Mtoe hiyo idea ya you own human beings, itasaidia mtu ku move on haraka,” Austin said.
He also explained that healing from heartbreak is not always a straight process. Austin said that even after someone feels they have healed, something small can bring back the pain and cause them to spiral again. He said his own situation was made harder because he had to see the person every day.
“Na unajua ukimaliza kuheal, kitu kidogo una spiral. Yangu ilikua mbaya because nilikua nawaona everyday. Tulikua class moja,” Austin said.
“Aliniambia ‘it is not you, it is me’. Hakunifanyia poa,” Austin Muigai said.
