Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote has shared his approach to building wealth, saying focus, consistency and understanding a business are important for anyone looking to grow financially.

Dangote said people should avoid trying to run too many businesses at the same time. He explained that having a clear focus allows a person to concentrate on what they understand instead of entering businesses they do not know.

“The thing you have to look at first of all is to be focused. To be actually consistent. Don’t try to do 100 businesses; be very very focused. And don’t go into any business that you don’t understand,” Aliko Dangote said on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, during an engagement with Kenyan and East African institutional investors.

The billionaire explained that entering a business without understanding it can leave a person relying on others to explain how the business works. He said this can make it difficult for an investor to make informed decisions about the business.

“Because if you don’t understand a business, then the people running that business will come and tell you what the business is all about. It is very simple,” Dangote said.

Dangote also spoke about his own experience in banking and how it influenced his decision to focus on areas he understood better. He explained that although he and his colleagues had been bankers, they later realised that their role was mainly as investors.

Focusing on what you know best

Dangote said the realisation led him to leave banking and concentrate on the areas he knew best. He presented the decision as part of his approach to focusing his efforts instead of spreading them across businesses he did not fully understand.

“We were bankers before, but we realised we are not professional bankers; we were only investors. I had to get out of banking to focus on what we know best,” Dangote said.

He also encouraged people to think beyond small goals when starting or growing a business. Dangote said having bigger dreams is important because small ambitions can limit how far a person is willing to go.

“Even as you are going to do something, have bigger dreams. If you have a smaller dream, you will never grow,” Dangote said.

His advice centred on keeping a clear focus while remaining consistent in business. Dangote also stressed the importance of choosing businesses that a person understands and setting goals that allow room for growth.
