Boniface Mwangi pushes for revival of safe playgrounds and parks in cities and towns

Activist Boniface Mwangi has renewed calls to protect and restore public playgrounds and parks, lamenting the steady disappearance of safe open spaces in many neighbourhoods across the country.
In a statement shared on his X account on Saturday, March 14, 2026, Mwangi criticised the gradual loss of recreational grounds in towns and cities, noting that many communities either never had proper public parks or have watched them slowly vanish over the years.
According to the activist, playgrounds and green spaces are not just decorative patches of grass in a city plan. They are important places where children can run freely, families can spread a picnic blanket under a tree, and friends can gather for a quick game or simply enjoy fresh air away from crowded streets and concrete buildings.

Mwangi observed that in many estates today, what once looked like a potential playground has often been replaced by buildings, parking spaces, or fenced-off developments. In some places, the only open ground left is a dusty field where children improvise football matches with stones as goalposts and dodge passing motorcycles at the same time.
He argued that cities should not only grow upward with tall buildings but also breathe through open spaces where people can relax and interact. Without such areas, he warned, urban life risks becoming cramped, stressful and disconnected.
The activist also pledged to push for the recovery of playgrounds and public recreational spaces that he says were taken away from communities over time.
“It’s a shame that most neighbourhoods in our cities and towns never had or no longer have safe, open parks where people can play, picnic, do sports, or simply hang out. We shall reclaim every stolen playground. Every single day, we believe our country can become better. Tujiamini,” Mwangi stated.
