Babu Owino launches initiative to get suspended or expelled students back to universities
Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has launched a new initiative seeking to get all students expelled or suspended from institutions of higher learning back to the classrooms to complete their studies.
In a video posted on his Facebook account on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, the lawmaker stated that arbitrary expulsion or suspension of students is a major challenge in institutions of higher learning, revealing that he has stepped up to confront it as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya.
“One of the challenges is the arbitrary suspension or expulsion of students,” the lawmaker stated.

How expulsion impacts families
He broke down the cost of a single expulsion or suspension, noting that every student in the institutions of higher learning carries the hopes of families and communities.
“These students are the lights of their families. You find that in a whole village, there are only one or two students who are going to the university. Therefore, these students are the work of a community. The communities came together and raised fees for them with the intention that one day these ladies and gentlemen would change their lives,” he said.
He revealed his intention to prepare and present a petition seeking to have students who have been suspended, as well as those expelled, allowed to continue their education.
“I urge all students who have been suspended from as far back as 20 years ago to as recent as one day ago; I urge them to contact me. I want to do a petition to the High Court of Kenya to ensure that these students are given another chance to pursue education,” he stated.
Babu Owino’s appeal
He used his own experience to emphasise the importance of education, noting that were it not for education, he might not have become who he is today.
“Since education is a right enshrined in our constitution, these students must be given a chance to complete their education. We are going to ensure that all these students come back and continue their education.

He requested that any student who was suspended or expelled from an institution of higher learning in the country to contact him on social media, providing their contact information and the institution that they were in.
